Writing
Students will dabble in a range of different genres for writing this week as they explore writing a newspaper article, creating a poem or a rap, designing a front cover to a book and organising a brochure or advertisement. They will use a variety of different graphic organisers to help them complete these genres and have lots of fun while being creative!
Reading
Students will read a range of different genres for reading this week, they will explore; newspaper articles, poems and raps, picture story books and advertisements.
Students need to continue reading daily as part of their tasks and also at night for their homework. If your child needs some inspiration for reading, here are some authors or books that might be of interest.
Students should also be encouraged to continue working on their fluency by reading out loud for part of their independent reading - whether they call a friend and read to them or read to family members or even pets!
Maths
This week students will be completing a project as part of an introduction to our new ‘economy’ unit of inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves. Students will design and make a product, advertise their product, create an instruction manual, and learn about costs, profit and loss. Students will also be required to apply their knowledge of fraction and percentages when designing their product as well as using their skills in measurement and geometry. The task is differentiated so that students can complete the maths components according to their ability.
Unit of Inquiry
This week students will begin their inquiry into; ’How We Organise Ourselves’. In this unit students investigate the interconnectedness of economics, society and the environment. They will explore how our economic decisions and activities impact our lives as well as the environment.Building on their knowledge and understanding they will consider how the choices we make affect both the environment as well as communities on a global scale.
Students will be researching how money has changed over time and bringing this understanding to the current situation. An important area of investigation will be ethical choices of producers and consumers, as well as the responsibility that each holds, especially in relation to the environment and communities worldwide. This in turn brings into consideration how countries are economically connected and the relationship between supply and demand.
The central idea for this unit is; “Economic choices impact communities and the environment”.
Wellbeing
This week students will be looking at a range of scenarios and determining whether it is a small glitch – a little unexpected problem or a medium sized problem that wasn’t expected and isn’t quick or easy to fix. There will also be problems that are big and serious, that adults are in charge of.
