Guide to Onsite Learning

Safety

The teaching and learning at CSC is based on the values of respect, responsibility, achievement and community. As we return to onsite learning we should be guided by our values in our actions, processes and decisions. In this time of uncertainty I know that we will all remain focussed on our core responsibility of educating the children in our care. It is imperative that we feel safe to do so, and we understand that all members of our community have responsibility in keeping ourselves, our families and each other safe.

Wearing masks correctly is one of the key actions that each of us can take to keep each other safe.  All students are required to wear masks inside the classroom and outside in the yard, unless a medical exemption is granted. The following are operational points that have been put in place to help with having a safe environment for us all:

  • Staggered year levels on-site. This dramatically reduces the number of students on site on any one day and will go a long way to reducing the interactions and give more space as people move around the school, and gives everyone time to settle into new routines.
  • The re-engagement activities that the sub-school teams have put together gives us a focus to prioritise the reconnection with our students, as well as reinforce the importance of how we can keep our community safe.
  • Classes have been allocated classrooms, as best as possible, to reduce the movement of students around the school and helps to manage the hygiene protocols in specific spaces.
  • Uniform remains important and we understand that families may have difficulties sourcing uniform. Students should have clearly visible uniform items that identify them as CSC students.
  • Reducing the areas of congregation including not using locker bays and using external doors will continue.
  • Hygiene products and protocols are in place.
  • Mask wearing – see below

Face masks

Our focus on positive relationships is also key. How we talk to and approach students will help to build connections and give us increased impact when we talk about the safety of our community, which also includes the students who may not have adopted a mature approach to mask wearing.

In the classroom

  1. Positive relationships approach, with non-verbal and verbal hinting
  2. Talking to the student.
  3. Warning
  4. Withdrawal
    • SMS to parents
    • Students will be given a reflection sheet to guide a conversation with either Sub-School staff, Youth Workers or Principals
    • Parents will be called and options discussed

In the yard

  1. Principals out in the yard
  2. As staff move through the school we will use non-verbal and verbal hinting and a brief conversation with students who are not wearing their mask or not wearing masks correctly. Most students will understand and correct their behaviour – no further action
  3. Students who are regularly dismissive of wearing face masks or those who refuse will be referred to the sub-school and / or escorted to a principal
  • Students will be given a reflection sheet to guide a conversation with either Sub-School staff, Youth Workers or Principals
  • Parents will be called and options discussed

We are all looking forward to reconnecting with each other and we understand that different levels of anxiety will be present amongst our community. Knowing this helps us to better understand and take care of each other. If you have any questions or issues please contact me.
