Principal's report

Dear Parents, Carers and the community of Moonee Ponds West Primary School,

We here we are at the end of other term of learning and growing together.  What a wonderful community we have here and I look forward to working closely with you all for the next full term.

Reports to Parents

Today your child/children will be bringing home their Semester 1 Report. You will have a hardcopy and an electronic copy this time. The electronic copy has been uploaded to your COMPASS page under the Reports page.  As part of the Review process we will be able to realign the reporting process to support and provide evidence to Individual Learning Plans and specific goals.  In 2016-17 the Reporting to Parent guidelines provided schools with advice so that reporting became more timely and relevant.  Students develop better learning outcomes when they are provided with timely feedback and when teachers use this to shape the next level of work. Student learning is very exciting!

Lost Property

We have a lot of LOST clothing! Most is unnamed and so what a waste! There are a band of parents who take these items home wash them and then pass them onto the Second-hand shops.  One of these helpers to our school lamented ‘if only there was a name on the item’! Please black texta surname on the inside collar is the way to go as we are not sure who Harry actually is!  Some of the items I have seen are expensive and must belong to someone.

In my first week at Moonee Ponds West a group of students prompted a conversation about compulsory uniform.  I smiled! Maybe this should be revisited.

Chess Club

Congratulations to the following students who achieved wonderful results in the recent Chess activities.

Advanced Group

  • Orlando P           Room 12
  • Lachlan D            Room 10
  • Leyna D                Room 18

Beginner Group

  • Harsharaj S         Room
  • Hardityaraj S      Room 24
  • Oscar R                 Room 22

Chess is a great strategic game and teaches many many different cognitive skills.  Well done to all involved.  If you are interested in your child taking part in Chess you can obtain details from the General Office.

Achievement over the Term

Over the past four weeks I have seen many children change their behavior and settle into really terrific learning routines.  Changing teachers can and could be a distraction, but from where I am at present this hasn’t been an issue. Why is this so?  I believe it is as a result of the support that the community gives to the school, and the will of the teachers to do their best in all situations.  It is also my belief that parents monitor the programs of our school and asking questions is crucial to building a strong positive relationship.   I look forward to learning together in the next Semester.

School Review

Next term we will be completing our Self Evaluation in readiness for our School review in October (Term 4).  In order to collect and collate the evidence we require we will be working with parents, students and staff throughout Term 3.   For parents there is a Forum in the evening and a survey for feedback.  We suggest your choose one of these so that we don’t get opinion that might be inaccurate. I will also be taking feedback through the Principal’s Open Line (Monday’s 9.45-10.15) so that I can attend Assembly.

I close now, and wish you all a very happy and safe holiday and look forward to welcoming you back on Monday July 16.

Sincerely

Kerri Simpson
