K-2 English & Mathematics

Today, students in Years K-2 will be bringing home notes regarding the new English and Mathematics syllabi. These syllabus documents identify the essential knowledge, skills and understandings that students are expected to develop at each stage of learning.

The notes sent home today also give some helpful tips on how to support students' learning at home.

Within the new English syllabus, content is organised under the 'Understanding Texts' and 'Creating Texts' headings. Focus areas include: oral language and communication; vocabulary; phonological awareness; print conventions; phonic knowledge; reading fluency; reading comprehension; creating written texts; spelling; handwriting; understanding and responding to literature.

The reformed Mathematics syllabus assists students to develop skills and abilities as competent mathematicians. Underneath the 'Working Mathematically' outcome, content is organised into focus areas of: number and algebra; measurement and space; statistics and probability.

In order to assist students in their learning, simple activities and conversations can take place at home to consolidate what is learnt at school. For example, using descriptive words for people and objects when you are speaking with your child can help them to develop a more complex vocabulary. Please read over these notes and consider incorporating these suggestions within your family time.
