STEM & Specialist Term 3 Overview
STEM Term Overviews
Year 2:
Students in Year 2 will be investigating how forces make objects move. They will describe these movements by using the vocabulary ‘push’ and ‘pull’ and conduct a range of experiments to record, sort and represent their observations and communicate their ideas to others. Students will use their prior knowledge of materials to determine the amount of force needed to move an object and make informed predictions about how the object will behave when the force is applied.
Year 3 & 4:
In Term 3, students in Grades 3 and 4 will be investigating magnets and how they work. They will conduct a series of experiments that will help them understand magnetic forces, magnetic fields and the types of materials that are attracted to magnets. Students will focus on using appropriate ways to record their observations as part of their scientific report write-ups.
Years 5 & 6:
Students in Grades 5 and 6 will investigate electrical circuits in Term 3. They will look into what is needed to create a circuit and determine how switches create open and closed circuits. Students will pose questions about circuits and undertake experiments to answer these questions. They will focus on using effective ways to record their results and discuss these results when drawing conclusions.
Music (Performing Arts/Visual Arts) Term 3 - 2022
Year 2 – Music (Performing Arts)
During term three, year 2 students will commence the term with an Indigenous focus, learning about one of our local places, Skeleton Waterholes Creek. They will learn about the local flora and fauna, and then collaboratively compose a soundscape to musically represent the area. This will include an exploration of our classroom musical instruments and how our knowledge of the elements of music can be used to create a composition that represents the energy, atmosphere, and location of the creek. They will continue the term with a compositional focus, composing rhythmic pieces using the creek for inspiration, and will also sing songs and play games to reinforce the musical concepts learnt.
Year 6 – Music (Performing Arts)
During term three, year 6 students will start the term with an Indigenous focus, exploring the question “How can music help us learn more about our Indigenous people and be a voice for change?” They will learn the song “First Nation” by Midnight Oil (featuring Jessica Mauboy) on the musical instruments and discuss the impact pop music has had on world change. Students will then use their musical knowledge to compose their own song for change (e.g. social or environmental change) and perform it in their chosen style. They will also sing songs and play games to reinforce the musical concepts learnt.
Printmaking (Visual Arts) Term 3 - 2022
Year 7 – Printmaking (Visual Arts)
During term three, year 7 students will be exploring the question “How do artists use materials, techniques, technologies and processes to realise their intentions in artworks?” In particular, we will be focusing on the artistic process of printmaking. Students will explore drawing and design, and various forms of printmaking such as collagraphy, nature printing, foam printing and linocut. The term will culminate in students using these various techniques to produce a final artwork.
Prep – Dance (Performing Arts)
During term three, prep students will explore and learn about how they can dance. They will share their dances with peers and experience dance as audiences. They will take responsibility for safe dance practices and will develop an awareness of self and others in the dance space. They will learn about the boundaries of the dance space and develop an understanding of the needs of a dancer, such as keeping hydrated.
