Valedictory: Class of 2020

The curtain, the couch and the top hat...

It seemed a long, long journey but we were finally able to celebrate the Valedictory of our Class of 2020 on Friday night. Last year's restrictions meant that a face-to-face Valedictory was not an option in October and so the decision was made to postpone rather than cancel the event, even if that meant the students having to return in 2021. I'm certain everyone in attendance on the night agreed it was the right decision.

As the sun slowly set, students, their parents, current and past staff gathered outside the hall to greet each other and catch up on all that has transpired since they last met. It was wonderful also to hear our graduates talking about their future plans.

The Preshil Valedictory has its own unique traditions. It is always held at Arlington, where the junior school students (with lots of assistance from their teachers) decorate the Kevin Borland Hall and hang the Valedictory curtain that was made by the graduating class so many years ago. There are no long-winded sermons from staff. The night belongs to the graduates and it's an opportunity for them to have their say. When the inspiration hits them, they take to the stage, perhaps sitting on the couch or wearing the customary top hat, and reflect on their educational journey. This year's class spoke beautifully and from the heart. They were rightfully proud of what they had achieved. They acknowledged their life-long bond. They thanked their teachers who went above and beyond to inspire them.

Once the formal proceedings concluded, everyone mingled, shared stories and took photos. If there was one resounding theme it was this: the Class of 2020 was a very special one. These young adults were committed and worked hard, they were personable and knew how to have fun. The staff considers it a real privilege to have taught them. We will miss them and hope they will keep in touch and let us know what future pathways they take.

In conclusion, I take this opportunity to thank all those involved in helping make the night a great success: School Council, Cressida, Deb, the classroom staff and students at Arlington and Victor and Natalie - their hard work was truly worth it.
