WHAT CAREER IS THAT?

What does a blogger do?

The Good Careers Guide states that a Blogger writes articles and opinion pieces for websites. While they often work freelance for a range of clients, they can also be employed in-house. They write pieces that are less formal than traditional journalistic articles, with the main purpose of their work being digital marketing and search engine optimisation.  The work they produce is designed to engage readers and drive website traffic. Bloggers need to –

  • be creative and original
  • be able to pick out and emphasise relevant facts
  • be able to write clearly and in a compelling manner
  • have good concentration
  • have the technical ability to switch between styles and forms of writing
  • have good time management skills, and the ability to handle pressure

Bloggers often have a communication OR journalism qualification, or have completed courses in creative writing, marketing, etc.

What does a Journalist do?

The Good Careers Guide states that a Journalist writes and edits news reports, commentaries, feature articles and blogs for newspapers, magazines, radio, television and websites, including online publications. Journalists usually start as cadets and report routine events. In newspapers and on radio and television, most reporters are expected to be 'generalists' who are able to cover almost any topic of interest.  With experience, and sometimes further training, journalists may perform a variety of tasks according to their area of specialisation.  There is a useful UK website - Careers Advice - What can I do with a Journalism Degree? – and students will find links to interesting careers including –

Journalism is offered by a number of universities, often as a major in an Arts degree, but there are also more focused media and communication degrees available to students.

TOP TIP

Did you know Blogging and Journalism skills can be transferred to many other jobs?

"Transferable skills are any skills you possess that are useful to employers across various jobs and industries. These might include skills such as adaptability, communication, organisation, teamwork or other qualities employers look for in strong candidates" .. .Indeed

YEAR 12 REMINDERS

Important Entry to Medicine:

UCAT is now open! Register here!

Students who have commenced Year 12 in 2021 and are planning to apply for any of the following university courses listed below are reminded that registrations for the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) are now open and close early May. Tests are available throughout July. Information has also been posted via Compass and email.

Students who are preparing for entry into these courses are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the practice tests and preparation material provided at MedEntry for UCAT Preparation.

You can download and view the 2022 latest entry information here below.

Reminder Entry to Teaching:

Applicants applying for entry into an initial teacher education course, to some institutions, will be required to complete an additional selection tool for non-academic attributes. CASPer is an online, video scenario-based situational judgement test that allows students to demonstrate their suitability for a teaching career. Registration will open in Semester 2 - in the meantime visit: https://takecasper.com

Early Applications:

Many universities have early entry schemes where you can be offered a place before the normal round of offers. These schemes can vary at each university but generally involve completing an application and being able to demonstrate that you are capable of succeeding in your chosen course and also that you are a good all-round student who will contribute well to the life of the university you have chosen to apply for.

ANU

Current domestic Year 12 students who intend applying directly to ANU for undergraduate study in 2022 are advised that ANU will now make offers based on Year 11 results on 9 August 2021, and these will be honoured for study in 2022 as long as students have completed Year 12 and achieved an ATAR.

Should the Year 11 results not meet entry requirements, selection officers will automatically consider Year 12 results in the December offer round.  Students will need to meet the co-curricular or service requirement and ANU has adjusted its requirements due to the disruptions of COVID-19.

Applications will open on 3 March 2021 and will close on 24 May 2021.  Students are advised to read through Application Information before applying at ANU Applications for 2022

More detailed information about all the above will be available in due course.
