Kindergarten Literacy & Numeracy Information Session

Our parents and guardians were invited to attend a Kindergarten Homework Information Session after school on Thursday 11th May. The session outlined the new 2023 literacy and numeracy curriculum that has been introduced for K-2 and how it has been implemented in the classroom. They looked at an overview of what a typical morning in the Kindergarten classroom looks like during the literacy teaching block and discussed in detail the teaching strategies used for the IntitaLit-Foundation program.

They went on to discuss the use of the visual mathematics wall in the classroom. The aim of Mathematics in Years K–10 is to enable students to become confident mathematicians, learning and applying the language of mathematics to communicate efficiently and effectively. Students develop a thorough understanding of concepts and a fluency with mathematical processes that helps them to interpret and solve problems.

Some suggestions of how to support your child’s learning at home are:

  • Comprehension is key to your child’s learning across all subjects. Discuss the context of the book you are reading with your child, ask them if they agree or disagree, why do they think the character did that, would they do the same thing?
  • Practice letter formation checking the height and length of the letters;
  • Encourage your child to ask a lot of questions! This deepens their understanding on any topic and expands their vocabulary;
  • Talk about numbers, for example on registration plates when you’re in the car. Add and subtract the numbers;
  • Ask your child about shapes they see and get them to explain how they know it is that shape.

Thank you Mrs Greenaway, Mrs Brooks, Mrs McInnes, Mrs O’Connor and Mr Baird for organising and presenting this session. This information is imperative to creating a partnership between school and home learning.
