Project Compassion

Caritas Australia helps over 1.5 million people in Australia, and around the world every year responding to disasters and walking with those in crisis. As Australia faces its own climate emergencies, our prayers are with everyone impacted including all of those working tirelessly in response to the recent disasters.

This year, Project Compassion is built around the theme of Global Community – Go Further Together.

This week, I want to share Sakun’s (pron. Sah-koon) story with you. Sakun a 32-year-old Indigenous Gond woman living in central east India.

Sakun is unmarried and lives with her sister in a rural village of India’s poorest state where 10 million people live in poverty.

The Gond tribal community are heavily disadvantaged and suffer especially high poverty rates.

To make life even more difficult, Sakun also has a disability. She has difficulty walking because she contracted polio as a child.

Sakun has been isolated and unable to earn a livelihood to care for herself. Until now.

In 2018, Sakun joined a Caritas supported program with our local partner, Samarthan. Together, we helped Sakun access a custom-made tricycle so she can get around on her own.

Sakun learned new skills in micro-business development. This helped her set up a small food kiosk and she now earns her own income. She is more resilient, more confident and more independent.

This was made possible through the support of people like you.

Supporting Project Compassion is a way we can proclaim the faith that is in our hearts and help our brothers and sisters in need.

During Lent, the Church invites us to take up the call to fast, pray and give alms - in solidarity as a global community.

St Patrick's Day

Mini Vinnies organised an exclellent day on Tuesday for the Feast Day of St Patrick.

The children dressed in green and gave a gold coin donation to Project Compassion.

The St Patrick's Day colour in competition - was well supported with the following winners

K-2 = Lachie Provost

3 -4 =  Grace Curtis

5 -6  = Sara Pittman

The afternoon games were very well organised and lots of fun!   Thank you also to all the families & children who brought green food to share for the St Patrick's Day celebrations.

St Patrick was a Bishop and missionary in Ireland and is the Patron Saint of Ireland. He followed his faith, trusted God and spread God’s message of love to all. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. After years of living in poverty, travelling and enduring much suffering because of his faith, he died on March 17, 461.
