Principal's Report

Dear students and families,

We are now halfway through this six week lock-down period.  Although there have been no formal announcements, I very much hope that we can have everyone back to school for term 4 to finish the year.  With the stage 4 lock-down measures starting to have an impact on the infection rate things are looking more positive than they were a few weeks ago.

Through phone calls and emails, many Naranga parents and carers have shared their experiences of home learning with me.  The past two weeks I have had more experience of home schooling with my own children.  I can relate to the stress and struggles which remote learning brings to the home.  I again thank you all for taking on this challenge-it helps keep the school community healthy and contributes to reducing the movement of people in our local area.  With the news of the coronavirus cluster at Frankston Hospital, it reinforces the importance of not getting complacent and seeing this lock-down through to the end.

Supporting our children to learn at home is no easy task.  Here are a few tips that I find help me with home schooling my children:

  1. Having a routine and setting expectations
  2. Making sure they have a space to work in
  3. Ensuring they understand communications from teachers
  4. Monitoring how much time they spend on line
  5. Helping them organise themselves
  6. Taking breaks outdoors

If you feel pressure to complete a number of tasks in the day, talk to your child's teacher about their expectations.  As parents, we often feel that we need to get lots of work completed and that adds to the pressure we feel.  It also can create conflict between us and our children.  You know your child better than anyone.  It's okay to sometimes cut something short if it is becoming a source of conflict.  Try coming back to it at another time.  Move into an activity that is highly engaging and fun for your child to change the mood.  That is certainly a strategy we would use here in the classroom.  Remember, we don't expect you to be an expert teacher.  The most important thing you can do is to continue to provide comfort, support and encouragement to your child.
