What a busy few weeks we have had in PE!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:  The focus for the past two weeks for our Foundation Students has been on the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP). This program aims to enhance the students Fundamental Movement Skills whilst completing a variety of activities. This fortnight saw the students learning extended with a variety of new activities for them to practise. These exercises focused on bouncing, hand-eye coordination, paddling, jumping and landing and manoeuvring their body through monition to shift an object.

The Foundation Students completed their first Health portfolio task which looked at the Human Body and labelling the main parts.

Year One/Two: Over the past two weeks, the Level 1 and 2 students continued with their four week basketball program. Their learning was extended to incorporate the acquired skills into more game-based play. Students worked wonderfully well in their teams and demonstrated a great level of respect for one another.  In the last two weeks, students will complete a Health and Well-being task in the classroom.

Level 1 students looked at the Indigenous Flag and developed an understanding of what the colours symbolise. They also learnt about some Key Aboriginal Sport Stars and the impact they have had on the sporting world.

The Level 2 students focused on healthy food groups and developed an understanding of why it is important to eat certain foods. They were tasked with selecting chosen foods and packing a healthy lunch box for school.

Year Three/Four: Over the last two weeks, our Level 3 and 4 students have participated in two lessons which involved practising the skills involved with basketball.

In lesson one, we worked on chest and bounce passes, dribbling and lay-ups. Once these skills had been practised on an individual level, we extended the students learning to incorporate these skills into mini team games. Some of these games played were Beat the Ball, Popcorn and we finished with the relay races to put all the learned skills together.

In lesson two we looked at playing a modified game of half-court basketball. Students were separated into two teams and versed their opposition in one half of the basketball court.

In the last two weeks, students completed a Health and Well-being task in the classroom which focused on the Healthy Food Pyramid and how they can make good choices when selecting certain foods to eat. In the last lesson students chose a lesson as a reward for all of their good work in Term One.

Year Five/Six: Level 5 and 6 students have participated in a two week unit involving striking.

The first session concentrated on practising the skills involved with the game T-Ball. The students learning was then extended to apply these skills into a real match. It was great to see the high level of skill on display.

During the second lesson we moved on to practising the skills required in cricket before moving on to a game of continuous cricket where the striking skill could be applied. There was some great shot accuracy and power on display.

Students also completed their portfolio task for the term which focused on the aspect of Mental Health and organisations which can support this notion. The students were tasked with creating a poster about a chosen Mental Health organisation and promoting it to the community.

Regional Swimming:

On Friday March 25th, eighteen students represented Upwey South at the Eastern Regional Swimming Carnival. To have eighteen students make is through to this level is a massive achievement and highlights the sporting talent that exists within our school. For those who are aware, this level of competition is extremely challenging and I could not be more proud of the effort, spirit and determination that was on display from our students. We had a couple of students and relay teams finish just outside of the qualification for the state level which was an amazing effort.

Thank you to all of the parents and family members who came to support on the day, we really appreciate it.

Congratulations again to all involved, you are all superstars!

Girls/Boys Division Tennis:

On Tuesday 29th March, seven students represented our school at the Division Tennis Carnival. There was some amazing tennis on display along with talent. To witness our students compete in such a respectful manner was fantastic and something they should be very proud of. Congratulations to Jade M and Will C who placed 2nd overall and Jake W who placed 1st. These students will progress to the Eastern Regional Carnival on May 9 and Boroondara Tennis Centre. These three students represented our district and played an amazingly high standard of tennis. Well done!
