Welcome Back!

Welcome back to a short but busy Term Two!

Already this term, our Year Three/Four students have been super busy preparing for and completing NAPLAN. While the Grade Four students weren't required to sit the test, they enjoyed practicing for Grade Five next year (and enjoyed the challenge of completing Grade Five practice tests!).

This week, the Year Three students completed a Writing, Reading and Language Conventions NAPLAN test. On Monday they will complete Numeracy; their final NAPLAN.

The Grade Three/Four teachers are so proud of the resilience and determination our students have shown when completing NAPLAN. They have all tried their best and should be very proud of their efforts.

INQUIRY: Earth, Moon & Sun

This Term, our Inquiry topic is Earth, Moon and Sun. Students will investigate the relationship between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun. They will learn how the Sun influences the seasons, the Moon affects the tides and oceans, and how the Earth’s rotation works in conjunction with these other factors to affect human activity.

By the end of the Term, students will be able to explain how the Earth rotates around the sun and what causes the seasons. They will understand that the Earth’s rotation on its axis causes day and night, and how changes to the Sun and Moon affect human activity.

To begin our topic, the students created a brainstorm with information they know about the Earth, Moon and Sun, and questions that they would like answered.

The students also explored some facts about the Earth, Moon and Sun; creating posters filled with facts about these and our solar system.

To assist us in learning all of these fascinating things, the students will be attending an excursion to Scienceworks next Wednesday (18th May). The students will participate in a session led by museum staff, visit the Planetarium to see the show ‘Solar System Odyssey’ and have time to explore sections of Scienceworks.

Following our Scienceworks excursion, the students will complete a reflection task to see what they have learnt about the Earth, Moon and Sun, and also to see if they can now answer some of their initial questions.

REMINDERS and IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Messages - If you need to have a message passed on to your child during the day, can you please send this via the office as we cannot guarantee that emails will be read during the day.
  • Year 3/4 Common Room. The students in Year 3/4 all keep their bags in classroom 7. We would love to be able to set this up as a common room with some couches. If you happen to have a spare dark coloured couch or two that are in good condition that you are rehoming, we would love for you to consider donating it to the school for students to use. Please contact Mel Rowe if you have something suitable.
  • Diaries - Your child should be bringing home their school diary each night. We would like to encourage your child (or parent) to write down the title and author of the book that is read, along with the page numbers that have been read. Students should be bringing in their diary to school daily. We would also appreciate if a parent/guardian signs the diary at least once a week.
  • Times Tables - Please assist your your child to practice these times tables so that they can respond automatically and in any order. When your child feels confident to be tested, they should let their teacher know. They will then be tested over the next few days. If they successfully pass the set of times tables, they will receive their next ninja belt (set of tables) to learn.
