Welcome to Term 4

Welcome to Term 4 everyone! What a great year it has been so far!

We are excited to announce the following opportunity for students;

Youth Mental Health Champions Project Launch

Led by Connect Health and Community, the project is a joint initiative with Bayside City Council, Glen Eira City Council, Headspace Elsternwick and the Bayside Glen Eira Kingston Local Learning and Employment Network.

Our aim is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people living or studying in the Local Government Areas of Bayside and Glen Eira.

We need 25 young people, in years 10, 11 or 12 in 2020 to put their hand up and nominate themselves to become Mental Health Champions. Champions will receive free training in Mental Health First Aid and will become passionate mental health advocates within their networks and communities.

This is an incredible opportunity for a young person wanting to gain skills in project management, public speaking and volunteering. Nominations are now open and close 10pm Sunday 3rd November 2019.

If this sounds like a young person you know  we would really appreciate your support by promoting this project

Mental health practitioners in secondary schools

Every Victorian Government secondary school campus will have a suitably qualified mental health practitioner by 2022.

Allocation of the mental health practitioners will be based on enrolments, with each campus receiving 0.5 FTE on average. In 2019, starting from Term 3, the initiative will be rolled out to more than 50 secondary school campuses.

Role of the Mental Health Practitioner

The mental health practitioner will work flexibly, based on the needs and priorities of their school and students. Schools can access a new mental health toolkit, with a suite of resources, guidance and advice tailored for the new mental health practitioners and other school-based health and wellbeing staff.

The role of their mental health practitioner will include:

  • provision of direct counselling support to students in schools and other early intervention services
  • coordination of supports for students with more complex needs
  • fostering a whole-school approach to health prevention and promotion
