The Victorian Model Solar car challenge

Congratulations to year 10 for winning the 1st prize in The Victorian Model Solar car challenge.

As part of the year 10 Physics Elective Curriculum this year Chemics students participated in the Victorian Model Solar car challenge.

The Victorian Model Solar Vehicle Challenge is an engineering competition undertaken by hundreds of students across Victoria, Grade 1 to Year 12.  Students design and construct their own vehicle, be it a car or boat, powered only by the sun! They learn real skills in design, engineering, troubleshooting, sustainability, and teamwork.

Through the construction period, students learned about how solar power and electric motors work, and how small improvements in reducing wasted energy (for example in friction or misalignment) can make large impacts on the speed of the final car.

The final race event was held on 20th Oct 2019 at the Scienceworks. There were 36 teams from 8 different schools participating in this category. All the contestants raced their cars against each other’s in multiple rounds to reach the final knockout round. Out of our 5 teams participating, we had 3 teams in the final round. In the final round, Luka and team won the 1st Prize despite having some rough weather conditions. Oscar and Imogen won the best-decorated car prize.
