10-12 Campus News

Every new beginning...

With the examination period over for the senior school and the year winding up it is both a time for reflection, and of course, with head-start in full flight, a time for new beginnings.  Our new year 10 students have already impressed with their strong understanding of the core values here at Sandringham College.  Teachers have already noted how polite and eager our newest senior school students have been.   Added to that is the real sense of urgency witnessed within our new VCE students.  Now is the time for the laying of strong foundations.

The examination process went very smoothly; as it always does, and was a credit to Sheryl Burgess, her team, and of course the students who faced these challenging assessments.  For our graduates, we wait and hope that the news is good.  With online results released on the 12th December, the school’s careers team will be on hand to help if the results were not what was expected and some revisions need to be made in regards to next steps.

In a recent address to a liberal arts education faculty, Tim Minchin listed his nine life lessons.  The nine lessons (some of them a touch questionable) have that poignant, irreverence that Mr Minchin has made a wonderful career out of, but as per usual there is a wonderful, if not somewhat metaphoric, sense of truth to his words.   I quite liked rule one:

‘You don’t have to have a grand dream….I advocate passionate dedication to the pursuit of short term goals.  Be micro-ambitious. Put your head down and work with pride on whatever is in front of you.  You never know where you might end up.’

I like the idea of being micro-ambitious. Being tenacious; being focused; but all the while keeping an eye out for that thing that appears in your periphery vision that may take you another step forward.

I am looking forward to the many micro-ambitions that will present next year.  From an emergence of a new year 9 Program (Djeembana) in term 2,  to the continued focus on adding value to our students both academically and socially.

I would like to take the opportunity to both thank you all for welcoming me to the school these past twelve months and also to take the time to wish you all a restful and successful break from the College.
