This year, the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) Book Week will take place from Monday 22nd August - Friday 26th August, 2022. We will be celebrating Book Week with a variety of engaging activities.

Each year across Australia, the (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools celebrate Australian children's literature by conducting activities and competitions to highlight the importance of reading. St Philomena’s students and teachers take part in a number of activities and competitions to encourage a continued love of books and reading. The CBCA also presents annual awards at the beginning of Book Week to books of literary merit, for outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature.

**Book Fair Parade (K-10)**

When: During Week 6 (22 August-26 August). The book parade will be held in the school hall from 9:15 am on Friday 26 August, 2022. Parents are most welcome to attend and then stay for a BYO picnic recess with their K-6 children.

What: Students are encouraged to dress up as a book character. There are many websites with ideas for easy book week costumes. Each grade, K-6 will have two winners. Students’ costumes will be judged on creativity, originality and authenticity. Secondary students will be judged in Stage 4 and Stage 5 cohorts.

Why: To immerse students in books and book characters and to celebrate the conclusion of Book Week.

**Scholastic Book Fair (K-10)**

What: Our Scholastic Book Fair brings books, available for purchase right into our school. There will be a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. The Book Fair will be held in the school library from Tuesday 23 August to Friday 26 August, 2022. Books are available for purchase from 8:30 am to 8:50 am; 1:10 pm to 1:40 pm and 3:10 pm to 3:30 pm The books range in price from $4 - $25.

Why: Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination. It also helps children discover who they are.

A Scholastic Book Fair provides:

· The best range, hand selected books from over 60 publishers worldwide

· Affordable books to suit every reading level and interest

· An opportunity for children to see, touch and connect with books they want to read

· An exciting event that engages children and promotes literacy

· Generous commissions — every book sold at the Fair earns free books for your school

· You are also able to donate books to the school if you would like.

How: The Book Fair is held in the school library. Each year St Philomena's between 25-35 boxes of books for every kind of reader. Students will have the opportunity to preview the books. They will receive a ‘Wish List’ form on which they can write any books they ‘wish’ to purchase. If you would like to purchase your child’s suggestions you can either follow the instructions on the Wish List form to pay online, or visit the Book Fair. EFTPOS facilities will be available.

**Books with Buddies (K-10)**

What: All students listen to a variety of books being read to them. Chairs are set up around the Primary quad for our ‘storytellers’ who comprise of both Secondary students and teachers. Students are placed into mixed groups and rotate around different ’storytellers’ who will be reading their chosen book from our library.

Why: To introduce students to books and authors from our library, they may not have heard of.

**Term 3 Library Teaching Program (K-6)**

What: During each library lesson this term, students will look at 6 Shortlisted books from the CBCA Book Awards.

Why: To promote, advocate and celebrate quality Australian literature for young people and to foster a love of reading.

How: Each class will analyse, debate and vote for the book they feel should win, and which books should be awarded Honourable mentions.

**What else?!**

The library space will have a number of different Book Week activities set up for students to participate in. These include listening to the CBCA Shortlisted books being read, Book Week related colouring in, mask making, activity posters and much more.

Book Week activity posters will be sent home to further engage students in this wonderful week. These posters will have quiz questions, would you rather… statements, simple reading challenges and more! They will be posted on Compass so make sure you keep an eye out for them! They will be a great source of discussion and fun around the dinner table or in the car.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge will finish on Friday 19 August so we are close to the end! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if your child’s details have been misplaced. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students complete the challenge with their classroom teacher through the books that are read to them on a daily basis.
