How to Spark Conversations About Reading

It is often difficult to talk to our children about reading. Often when parents and carers ask their children about the books they are reading at school, they receive answers such as “don’t know” and “can’t remember.” It is even more difficult when we have not read the books ourselves. Below are some useful questions you can ask your child without having to be a literary expert.

  1. How did the book make you feel? Were you amused, upset bored, angry, intrigued?
  2. What did you think about the main characters?
  3. Which parts of the book stood out to you?
  4. What did you think about the ending?
  5. How does this book compare to other books you have read?
  6. What moments in the novel made you decide that you liked or disliked it?
  7. Does this book remind you of any other books or movies?
