Reflection

On this day in 2019, John Henry Newman was named a saint by Pope Francis.

Born in England in 1801, Newman was an Anglican priest, a poet, a scholar and a great preacher. In the second half of his life, he became a Catholic priest and cardinal. He wrote many important religious books and his thinking about the Christian faith is still highly valued. Some schools and university colleges are named after him.

Prayer

Lord our God,

you prepared Mary and Joseph

for the birth of their son, Jesus.

Open our hearts to receive Jesus, our Saviour.

Teach us to look for him each day,

and follow him with joy.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
