Year 7 Camp

Forest Edge, Neerim East

In Week 5, the Year 7 Camp took place at Forest Edge in Neerim East. It was a wonderful three days, full of fun activities, new friendships and teachers embarrassing themselves at the talent show. A special thank you to the Year 9 student leaders who ran the night activities and provided great support throughout the camp. Congratulations to all the Year 7s for displaying the college values and making it such a fantastic time together!

Student reflections from camp

"In my experience year 7 camp was loads of fun! Getting to meet all the new people and doing a bunch of different activities was the best. The talent show was an extremely memorable night, all the performers were very entertaining.  Of course, I can’t forget the game night, just getting to run around and play all these fun games was definitely a great time! I remember on the last night we had the option to either go on a bush walk and go stargazing or watch Moana, I chose to go on the bush walk. The walk up the hill was agonizing but once we got to the top the view took my breath away! Overall, Year 7 camp was an absolute blast!"

"I could feel the excitement building as I wheeled my case towards the awaiting buses.  After two years of cancelled camps for many students, there was relief that this camp was actually going ahead. We all boarded the bus and waited patiently to depart. As the bus approached Forrest Edge, I knew the fun was about to begin! Once everyone settled in, it was time to get ready for our first set of activities. My group started with hut building and my team used tactics such as covering the sticks with bark and ferns to prevent us from being splashed by the water.
My favourite camp activity was the flying fox. I zoomed so fast down the line with the fresh air blowing behind me. My favourite moment on this camp was walking up the steep hill to watch the stars. I felt so special to have that amazing experience to watch the shooting stars, comets and the milky way. On the way back to the cabins that night my friend Mia was lying down on the grass, and we all thought she was a wombat!
Benefits from going to the camp was that I challenged myself to do things that I’ve never done before and had a growth mind set. Also, I made some fabulous friends along the way."

"Year 7 camp was incredible! It provided a great start to high school and an amazing opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. I made new friends across the whole year level, learnt more about the teachers, tried new things that I had never done before and gained a lot more confidence overall.
I can’t decide which activity was my favourite as I enjoyed them all. I was challenged, entertained, amused and educated from hut building, river sledding, climbing the high ropes, taking aim at archery, zooming down the flying fox and performing at the talent show. The whole camp experience was special as it enabled me to learn more about myself – was I brave enough to squash that mutant bug in our room? (I need to continue working on my bug rehoming skills!) Build a waterproof hut?  Could I balance on the high ropes? Spot the Milky Way and Southern Cross on the night walk? (We actually saw the International space station!) How far could I travel down the river on the raft?
The talent show provided a fun opportunity to challenge myself in front of my peers. I performed a jazz routine with my friends from the Dance Academy and we proudly came in 3rd place. The teachers put on an entertaining and memorable performance – the stage will never be the same again.
I’m so pleased that my first year at Sandringham College started with this experience – I look forward to an exciting year ahead with my new friends and teachers."

"Year 7 camp was the most exciting camp yet! Forest Edge offered some of the most glamorous scenery in Gippsland. With the swift river rafting activity going downstream on the chilly Latrobe River. Also, the food was very appetising, making us have enough energy to do each activity. Like archery, when we all tried to hit the apple at the top of the target, instead of getting a bullseye."
