Important Information

for parents

Students with diagnosed medical conditions

To ensure that Sandringham College can appropriately support students with diagnosed medical conditions we ask that parents read the information below and provide the information/medical resources required.

Anaphylaxis/Epipens

All students who are diagnosed as being at risk from an anaphylactic reaction must provide the school with an Individual Management Plan from the treating medical practitioner and a current adrenaline autoinjector (epipen).

We ask all parents and carers to ensure that the school has a current Management Plan and an epipen to be stored in the Admin Office of their base campus in case it is required.

ASCIA Action Plan: Anaphylaxis - Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA)

Asthma

All students who are diagnosed as being at risk from asthma must provide the school with an Asthma Action Plan from the treating medical practitioner and an asthma kit.  The asthma kit should contain the students prescriber reliever medication and their own spacer (if they use one)

We ask all parents and carers to ensure that the school has a current Action Plan and  student asthma kit to be stored in the Admin office of their base campus in case it is required.

Administration of Medication - other than for asthma or anaphylaxis

If a student requires medication Sandringham College encourages parents to to arrange for this to be taken outside of school hours.  When a student requires medication at school parents are asked to provide a Medication Authority Form from the treating medical practitioner and arrange to deliver the medication to the Admin office of their base campus.  Sandringham College will ensure that the medication is administered to the student in accordance with the Medication Authority Form and will keep a record or medication administered.

Processes for students who are unwell - POLICY UPDATE

Sandringham College recognises that students who are feeling unwell need to be supported to go home during the school day. We cannot supervise or provide medical care at school, we do ask that students are collected by parents and that they go home if feeling unwell. Some students have been directly contacting parents via mobile phone or text to request to go home. It is essential that for student safety that students follow the correct processes if feeling unwell.

IF UNWELL

1. Students must inform their classroom teacher or Year Level Leader and report to the administration office at either campus

2. Office staff will contact parents via phone or text

3. Office staff record illness on EDUSAFE as required by the Department of Education

4. Parents/carers will collect students from the admin office - signing them out of school via COMPASS as required by Child Safe Standards or provide permission for students to travel home independently if in Years 10-12.

Students in Years 10-12 who present with a minor illness may be permitted to travel home independently with verbal or written permission from parents. Where permission is provided, it will be logged on COMPASS. Parents/carers providing permission must acknowledge that they accept duty of care for their child once they leave school grounds. No student in year 7-9 will be permitted to travel home independently.

MOBILE PHONES

A reminder that students must not use their mobile phones anywhere at school during the school day.  This is a Ministerial policy formally issued by the Minister for Education under section 5.2.1(2)(b) of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic). Students are welcome to use phones in the administration building (Bluff Road), Year Level Leaders offices (Bluff and Holloway Road) to call home if necessary.

Phones will be confiscated if students are using them during the school day. After 3 consecutive confiscations, parents/carers will be required to collect the phone from school.

VAPING/SMOKING

Parents/carers and students are reminded in Victoria it is illegal for any person aged 18 or over to obtain, possess or use nicotine e-cigarettes, or e-cigarette cartridges containing nicotine, or nicotine liquids for use in a vaporiser, without a prescription. It is illegal to sell e-cigarettes to, or buy e-cigarettes for, any person aged under 18 years whether or not the e-cigarettes contain nicotine.

Whilst it is not unlawful for a person to possess or use e-cigarettes that do not contain nicotine, it is unlawful to use them on school premises or within 4 metres of a school entrance.

Any student caught VAPING or SMOKING at school or at a school event will receive an automatic suspension.
