Students in Year 7 Digital Technology for the past few weeks have been working on a collaborative task where they were required to build a town in Minecraft using pre-defined requirements. They were required to plan and design, create and develop, and then evaluate how their end product meets the initial requirements. The purpose of this task is to promote creativity and problem solving, as well as promoting collaboration between peers after months of online learning.
The interpretation of the requirements were left up to the students in each group, with varying results from medieval towns to underwater living spaces.
Here are some photos that illustrate what the students have been working on.
In the first edition of the newsletter for this year, I mentioned the introduction of Minecraft Club where students on the 7-9 Bluff Road campus could meet once a week to join other like-minded individuals, in a space where creativity and collaboration can flourish. This year, Minecraft has become integral to the Digital Technologies curriculum at Year 7, as a medium for the creation of both collaborative and individual models and builds.
Throughout online learning, Minecraft Club didn't stop, with a small group of Minecraft Club members joining me one lunchtime per week to continue building, creating and socialising in a safe space.
Last week, we hosted Minecraft Club for the first time since returning to school, with our computer lab being at near capacity. This resulted in one of the highest participant counts we've seen this year in Minecraft Club.
We invite anybody interested in Minecraft to join us on Wednesdays in B1 at lunchtime. Use the computers in the room or bring your own device. You don't need to buy Minecraft as we use the Education Edition, which is free for all Sandringham College students. Interested students are encouraged to join our Microsoft Team (linked for current students to click on) to keep updated. Look forward to seeing you there!
