Year 5/6 News
The students in Years 5/6 have continued to demonstrate enthusiasm, resilience and a commitment to learning across all curriculum areas this term.
Religion
In Religion, students have been exploring the unit Mary: Woman of Faith. Through this unit, students have developed an appreciation of the qualities that made Mary a faithful disciple of Jesus, including her trust, courage, humility and willingness to say "yes" to God's call. They have also deepened their understanding of key Church teachings and beliefs about Mary, including her special role in salvation history and the ways Catholics honour her through prayer, feast days and devotional practices. Students have reflected on how Mary's example can inspire them to live lives of faith, service and compassion. We also extend our congratulations to Hugh, who achieved First Place in the Diocese, and Audrey, who achieved Second Place in the Diocese, for their outstanding entries in the Mary, Depicted Through Artworks competition conducted by the Catholic Schools Office. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the creativity they demonstrated through their artwork.
Sport with Mr Hyatt
In Sport, students have been focusing on developing the skills needed for our upcoming Athletics Carnival. Through a variety of activities and drills, students have been practising running techniques, sprint starts, high jump, long jump, discus and shot put. As well as improving their athletic abilities, students have been learning the importance of perseverance, sportsmanship and setting personal goals. It has been wonderful to see students encouraging one another and striving to improve their individual performances.
English
Our English book study this term is Bright New World by Cindy Forde, illustrated by Bethany Lord. This inspiring text presents a hopeful vision of a sustainable future and encourages young people to become active stewards of our planet. Students have been engaged in thoughtful discussions about climate solutions, including renewable energy, regeneration, skyscraper/vertical farms, biodegradable products and innovative technologies designed to reduce waste and protect the environment.
One of the most powerful aspects of the text is its focus on hope. Rather than dwelling on environmental problems, Bright New World demonstrates how human creativity, scientific innovation and collective action can help create a better future. Students have explored how the ideas in the book connect to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and have reflected on the positive role they can play in caring for our common home.
Mathematics
Each Mathematics lesson begins with ten minutes of Retrieval Practice, where students revisit previously taught concepts and strengthen their understanding through discussion and problem-solving. This valuable routine helps consolidate learning and build confidence.
This term, students have studied Data, Unit Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, and are currently learning about Time. Students are developing their understanding of 12-hour and 24-hour time, converting between time formats and interpreting timetables from real-life situations. Year 6 students are also extending their learning by calculating elapsed time, using mental strategies to add and subtract time, rounding time calculations and solving complex duration problems involving both 12-hour and 24-hour notation.
Visual Arts
Students have completed their entries for the NERAM Let's Hang It! exhibition and should be very proud of their efforts. We have continued our study of nature in art, examining how artists use the natural world as inspiration for creativity, storytelling and personal expression. Art education encourages students to observe closely, think critically and communicate ideas in unique ways. It also helps foster creativity, confidence and an appreciation of the diverse ways people interpret and represent the world around them.
HSIE
In HSIE, students are exploring the unit A Diverse and Connected World. Through this learning, students investigate how places, people and cultures differ across the globe and examine Australia's connections with other countries. They are considering how trade, migration, communication and travel have shaped our relationships with the wider world. Students are also exploring how people's experiences, values and cultural backgrounds influence the way they view and connect with places. This unit encourages students to develop a broader understanding of global citizenship and to appreciate the rich diversity that exists within our world.
Science
Students continue to enjoy their Science lessons with Mr Hyatt. This term's unit, Light Shows, explores the fascinating world of forces and energy. Students are investigating the difference between contact and non-contact forces and examining how energy can be transformed from one form to another. Through hands-on investigations and design challenges, students are developing their scientific inquiry skills by posing questions, making predictions, conducting fair tests and analysing data. They are also learning how electricity can be used in products and systems and exploring ways to make forces stronger or weaker. The unit encourages students to think critically, work collaboratively and apply their learning to real-world situations, with many students enthusiastically embracing the opportunity to experiment, problem-solve and discover how science shapes the world around us.
Goal Setting
As the term progresses, students continue to work towards achieving their personal and academic goals. They have embraced opportunities to demonstrate leadership, collaborate effectively with their peers and contribute positively to our school community. We are proud of the maturity, responsibility and determination they bring to their learning each day and look forward to seeing their continued growth throughout the remainder of the term.
