Year Seven Students Bring Light to Darkness Through SolarBuddy Program

Did you know that nearly 10 percent of the world's population lives in energy poverty, lacking access to safe and reliable energy sources? This means that children and their families are left in darkness every night, unable to study or pursue their education. The use of fuel-based lighting not only harms the environment but also poses serious health risks to those who rely on it.

For the fifth year in a row, our Year 7 Girton students have participated in the SolarBuddy program, an initiative by an Australian charity that aims to provide clean, reliable, and safe energy to children in need. Through this program, our students have purchased and assembled solar lights for donation to families living in energy poverty, allowing them to study and thrive.

By taking part in the SolarBuddy program, our Year 7 students have gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by over 1.3 billion people around the world who lack access to electricity, particularly in regions like Africa and South Asia. They have also learned about the harmful impacts of relying on primitive forms of energy.

We are grateful to the families who supported the SolarBuddy program this year, and we are proud to see our students embracing the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children less fortunate than themselves. Together, we can bring light to darkness and help create a brighter future for all.
