Reading
Students will continue to develop and apply a range of comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding of texts. They will use these skills to complete focused reading responses and participate in Literature Circle discussions, exploring elements such as character development, plot, language features, and themes.
Linked to our Inquiry unit on Chemical Science, students will also read a variety of informative texts about famous scientists and significant scientific discoveries. They will build their understanding of scientific vocabulary, theories, states of matter, and chemical processes and reactions, helping them make meaningful connections and better understand the investigations they conduct in class.
Writing
Students will continue to write persuasive and narrative texts, revising the process of planning, drafting, revising/editing, conferencing and publishing. Our students will also publish their own picture story book for their 2026 Foundation buddies, which will then be presented to their buddies at the Buddy Picnic. Students will write procedural and scientific reports to follow the process of their investigations. This will include describing the aim, hypothesis, materials, method, observations and conclusions.
Speaking and Listening
This term, students will continue to build confidence in public speaking through presentations to their class, cohort and during assemblies. They will consolidate the skills developed throughout the year as they participate in our Year 5 debating program, applying techniques of persuasive speaking and respectful argument. In Literacy Circles, students will also engage in substantive conversations, sharing their ideas and connections about characters, setting, plot, themes and literary devices.
Spelling and Grammar
In spelling, we will continue to address weekly concepts, which align with the 4 pillars (Etymology, Orthography, Morphology and Phonology) and the 7 Syllable Types. Students will continue to investigate sound phonology and orthographic combination spelling structures weekly. They will continue to undertake word investigations, which align with spelling goals. We will attend to students' points of need through personalised word lists, which they will be tested on weekly. This will also be consolidated by Literacy Planet homework activities and within the classroom. Students will embed what they have learnt through weekly concept focuses within their writing for the term. Ultimately, the students will be tested on the same words from the beginning of the year, to show where achievement has been met and to plan for future spelling goals moving into the following year.
