WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY?
Biodiversity comes from two words- bio meaning life and diversity meaning variety. The variety of different plants, animals and microorganisms and the ecosystem they are part of.
NARANGA’S BIODIVERSITY SCORE
Last week Pia Wrafter from Ceres came to our school to work with students from Upper Junior McFaul and Pathways Sustainability group. Students used visuals and worked in groups with staff to record wildlife, native and introduced trees, shrubs, and ground cover in our school grounds. The audit included mulched areas, productive gardens, weed and soil management. Students looked into the landscaped playground area from the wire fence. An estimation of planting was taken.Pia mentioned that the new landscaped areas (in the Lower Junior, Pathways classrooms and front of the school) will be wonderful habitat areas for birds and animals when plants develop more. The new landscaping has added an extra five hundred and thirty eight Indigenous / native plants to our school grounds. Students also planted fifty seedlings provided by Frankston council during the Schools Tree Planting Day this term. Last year’s Biodiversity Habitat score was seventy-six out of one hundred. Our Habitat Quality Assessment score was 80 out of 100.
