UNDERSTANDING LEARNING PROGRESS
On Tuesday, staff spent their Professional Practice Day focusing on assessment and reporting, writing student reports and marking Learning Journal tasks.
At our school, we see learning as a continuum. Children progress at different rates, sometimes learning accelerates, sometimes it plateaus, and both are part of a healthy learning journey. Progress depends on many factors, including confidence, prior knowledge, wellbeing, and how much new information the brain is processing.
This year, our staff have been exploring how humans learn, including Cognitive Load Theory. This approach helps teachers design lessons so students can focus on key ideas without feeling overwhelmed. Because working memory has limited capacity, teaching materials and environments are designed to reduce unnecessary load and help move new information into long‑term memory.
Below is a simple diagram showing how learning happens in the brain and the elements that support it.

YEAR 3–6 CAMP INFORMATION SESSIONS
Thank you to the families who joined our online Camp Information Sessions last night. Camps play an important role in building student independence, friendships, and learning beyond the classroom.
Term 3 Camps
If your child is unable to attend camp, please inform their teacher promptly, as this affects planning and final costs.
Presentations will be posted via Compass, and a Compass event will include full details and the payment instalment plan. Families needing financial support are encouraged to reach out so we can discuss available options.
Thank you to our Year 3 – 6 staff for leading the information sessions and supporting families.
STORYTIME
Next Monday (June 15) morning, we’ll be hosting our Preschool Storytime, and this week’s theme is Colours! All preschool children are welcome to attend and enjoy stories, songs, and colourful fun. Our Year 6 Library Team is looking forward to welcoming many preschool children and their parents for this joyful session.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
We’d love to celebrate our students. Please send through any achievements, big or small, that your child would like to share with our school community.
Congratulations, Mia A (5M). Over the King’s Birthday long weekend, she competed in the Nunawading Spectres Basketball Tournament with her Rep team, Warrandyte Venom U12. The team remained undefeated and finished as grand final champions
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS
Semester 1 student achievement reports will be available on Monday 22 June. Reports will outline your child’s learning progress; however, full descriptive comments may not be included due to industrial action taken earlier this term by the Australian Education Union.
Learning Conferences will be held on Wednesday 24 June (3:50– 5:00pm) and Thursday 25 June (1:30– 7:00pm). Bookings will open in Week 9 via Compass.
School will finish at 1:00pm on Thursday 25 June to support the conferences.
Have a great weekend,
Ms Garrity
