SWPBS Update: Building Consistency, Safety and Positive Behaviour Across Our School

This term, our Year 3/4A, 3/4B and 3/4C classes have continued engaging deeply with the school-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework. As part of the rollout, students have participated in a series of explicitly taught lessons focused on everyday routines such as how to line up safely, enter and exit classrooms calmly, and move around the school in a respectful and responsible way.

These lessons may seem simple, but they are grounded in strong evidence. Research in the SWPBS and broader behaviour science fields highlights that explicitly teaching behavioural expectations—just like academic skills—significantly increases student success and reduces behavioural challenges. Clear routines also reduce cognitive load, allowing students to focus more on learning and social connection rather than guessing what is expected. Consistency across teachers and environments has been shown to create a sense of predictability, which supports both emotional safety and academic engagement.

We are already seeing these benefits at Bundoora Primary. Students have shown increased confidence in understanding what it looks and sounds like to Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe in different school settings. These consistent routines also contribute to a calmer, more settled school environment, giving teachers more instructional time and students greater opportunities to learn.

Next year, we will be rolling out SWPBS across the whole school. A whole-school approach builds continuity from year level to year level and ensures every child experiences predictable, positive learning environments.

Positive Chronicles – Celebrating Student Success

You may have noticed Compass notifications over the past few weeks as students across the school have been receiving Positive Chronicles acknowledging their efforts in demonstrating our SWPBS expectations. These are separate from and in addition to our traditional Student of the Week awards presented at assembly.

The Positive Chronicles have created a wonderful sense of excitement around the school. Families have been sharing heart-warming conversations at home, and students are proudly discussing the effort and choices that led to their recognition. In addition to these individual celebrations, each week at assembly one class receives a Class Award for showing the most improvement in demonstrating our shared expectations.

Parent Forum – We Value Your Voice

As part of the implementation process, we warmly invite parents and carers from Year 3/4A, 3/4B and 3/4C to join us for an SWPBS Parent Forum. This will be an opportunity to hear more about the trial, ask questions, and provide feedback to help guide our school-wide rollout in 2026.

We look forward to continuing this journey together and building a positive, consistent and supportive environment for all Bundoora students.

Warm regards,
