TERM OVERVIEWS
Reading:
The students have started Term 2 by establishing expectations and routines for their weekly book club. Students have selected a book that they will read and discuss with their small group each week to enhance their comprehension skills and develop their speaking and listening skills. Throughout the term students will analyse the structure and language features of poems. In the second half of the term, students will make connections with their reading, understand cause and effect, and learn to identify the main idea in a text.
Math's:
In Math's this semester students will be working on creating nets and identifying the properties of 3D shapes, and also learning how to measure the volume and capacity of 3D shapes. Students will also look at solving problems with perimeter and area of 2D shapes. Continuing our unit on Measurement, students will look at elapsed time, and then conversion between units of measurement. We will be consolidating their knowledge on decimals and then working towards multiplying and dividing with decimals. We will round out the term learning about probability using fractions, decimals and percentages. Finally looking at number and algebra and continuing and creating number patterns.
Writing
In Writing this term, we will explore creating fictional narrative texts based on information and recounts based on our Inquiry learning. The first half of the term will be dedicated to exploring figurative language and poetic structure through analysing and writing Limericks, ‘found poetry’ and ballads told from the perspective of an immigrant migrating to Australia. Later in the term, we will write non-fiction narratives, through a story or diary entry written from the same character's perspective.
Inquiry
In inquiry this term, our big idea will be ‘Australia becomes a nation’. Throughout this unit we will be exploring Australia’s recent history, zooming in on the period from 1889- present. The students will begin by developing an understanding of the lead up to federation and as we move through time learning about the social and cultural changes brought on by significant events such as immigration and the First and Second World Wars.
