What’s being happening in Grade 5

  

GRADE 5 

Literacy Overview  

This term in reading we are focusing on making predictions, asking questions, analysing characters and using inference to understand texts in more detail. Students are also starting book clubs, where they will choose a text to read and discuss with other students. Some of the discussions they students will be looking at the vocabulary the author uses, making predictions, analysing the storyline and/or characters.  

This term in writing we are learning how to write historical biographies using third person perspectives. Students will be researching a figure in colonial Australian history and using this information to write a biography in their own words.  

 

Numeracy Overview  

This term in numeracy we are focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages for most of the term. Students will be learning about equivalent fractions, counting by fractions and adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different dominators, strategies to solve decimal equations, and applying this knowledge into a variety of open-ended problems.  

 

Inquiry Overview  

This term in Inquiry we are learning about the Australian colonies with a focus on the social, economic and political reasons for the establishment, how the environment changed over time, the effects on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the causes and reasons why. Students will be developing a presentation about the impact of a significant event or development on an Australian Colony. 

  

Reminders And Dates For Grade 5 Students  

Please make sure students have their diaries at school every day.  

Please ensure that jumpers and jackets are clearly named.  

 

How Parents Can Support Their Grade 5 Child At Home  

Practice spelling words every week and have a go at the dictation passage.  

 

 

The grade 5 students at the end of last term (and continued into this term) started building a 3D city that had to include the net of at least 3 different types of 3D shapes. Students worked really on this project, and it was great to see the creativity of different students.
