Mrs Clare Grainger
It has been a learning and action packed few weeks as all classes having been engaged in our Chemistry unit. We have investigated chemistry in the everyday, materials and their different properties as well as changes to materials, both physical and chemical.

Grade 3/4 students testing the effect of dishwashing liquid on milk fat as seen by the movement of the food colouring.

Grade 3/4 students observing the effect of a chemical change to materials, where a new material is produced; in this case the combination of vinegar and bicarb soda to produce carbon dioxide gas.
Our final three sessions will focus on activities and experiments, linked to everyday chemistry, where students can apply and consolidate their growing understandings in hands on ways. Students have been, and will continue to, apply the method of scientific inquiry through making predictions, recording results and drawing conclusions. Looking forward to some fun as we draw towards the end of the year.

F/1/2 students testing the properties of different materials.

Making our own bubble mixture!

Grade F/1/2 students made playdough! It was fun observing the physical changes to the different ingredients as they were mixed, as well as the physical changes to the playdough as we played with it.

Grade 5/6 students demonstrating the arrangement of particles in a solid - close together!

5/6 students observing a chemical change!

5/6's observing a physical change to materials.
Chemistry in cooking – Thursday 27th November: As part of our Science session next Thursday, students in each class will be involved in making pikelets served with fruit. This activity demonstrates both physical and chemical changes to materials and will be an enjoyable and tasty task! Please let me know if you would prefer your child not to eat during this session. Thank you.
