Grade 3 Term 2 Update

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed a refreshing break after a very productive first term. We have a busy term ahead of us, filled with deep dives into science, history, literature and mathematics. Our literacy programs this term are designed to broaden students' perspectives and sharpen their technical skills. Here is a look at what your child will be exploring this term:

Reading

In Reading, we are shifting our focus toward building students' world knowledge. By exploring scientific concepts and the nuances of neurodiversity, students are learning to see the world through different lenses. Our class novel is The Thing About Oliver by Deborah Kelly. Through this text, we will practice daily reading fluency and expand our vocabulary while discussing bigger themes like resilience, growth, and challenging stereotypes. We end the term by examining and learning through non-fiction texts. Again, we aim to build students' knowledge and key vocabulary.

Writing

In Writing we are continuing to develop our craft as strong writers, using the mentor text Zen Shorts. Students will focus on mastering various sentence types—statements, commands, exclamations, and questions—to add variety to their work. Later in the term, we will transition into Information Reports,  ending the term by exploring the history of global celebrations.

Numeracy: Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP)

Our daily math routine remains consistent to ensure every student builds a solid foundation. Each day includes: Daily Reviews: To reinforce previously learned concepts. Quick Teaches: Short, sharp instructional bursts. Explicit Sessions: teacher-led instruction where mathematical concepts are broken down clearly and students repeatedly practise what they are learning.

Knowledge Units: Biology and History

This term, our Knowledge Units will see students become young scientists and historians. We begin with a focus on Biology, studying living things and their life cycles. Later in the term, we move into History, where we will investigate the origins and significance of various cultural celebrations around the world.

Important Reminders

Year 3 Camp: We are thrilled that students will be heading to Campaspe Downs for an overnight camp in November. While it is still a few months away, please keep a close eye on Compass for updates regarding dates, packing lists, and payment schedules.

Homework: We ask that Grade 3 students complete:Reading: 20 minutes, 5 times per week. Maths: 3 "My Numeracy" tasks or engagement with "Sunset Maths" via Essential Assessments. If you have any questions regarding logins or tasks, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher.

Tissue Boxes: As we enter the cooler months, "runny nose" season is upon us! We would greatly appreciate any donations of tissue boxes for the classrooms.

We are looking forward to a wonderful Term 2 with you and your children!

With kindness,

The 2026 Grade 3 Team
