Weekly Values Focus - Respect

Week 3: Footscray West students use polite communication
At our school, we show respect by being polite when we communicate. When we use good manners, such as saying “please,” “thank you,” “excuse me,” or “sorry,” we make people feel valued and respected. Using manners helps everyone feel comfortable and included – in the classroom, the playground, and out in our community.
We can show good manners in lots of ways. In class, we raise our hands to speak and wait our turn to share ideas. We listen carefully when someone else is talking and use positive body language – like smiling, nodding, or making space for others. We take turns so everyone gets a fair go, and we speak in a gentle, thoughtful voice. Manners aren’t just about words – they’re about showing respect through what we do.
Being polite also means that we don’t use inappropriate language, such as swear words or words that are offensive to others. At our school, we live by ‘no put downs’. This means that we do not tease, gossip or say mean things about others. Not talking back to your teachers also shows respect. Pause, and think before you speak to ensure your language and tone are respectful with everyone you are talking with.
This week, try noticing moments where you can use your manners. Can you remember to say “please” or “thank you”? Can your actions show the same respect as your words? Small manners make a big difference to how we all feel at school.
