Years 9 & 10 Sub-School News

Assistant Principal's Report

Term 3 was over and done in a flash but packed full of exciting events and opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of activities.

The Year 9 students attended City Experience in the second last week of Term 3 and had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the city, learn more about Melbourne and attend a variety of activities. These included a Radio Basics Course at SYNFM, meeting with the Big Issue staff and learning about the impact of homelessness through an Intersection City Walk. They also visited the Melbourne Museum, Eureka Skydeck, ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) and participated in a Graffiti Art Tour. The students were exceptionally well behaved and represented the school in a very positive manner.

At the start of September I had the privilege of attending an evening screening of the Power of Activism documentary. A group of students have been working on a short film about the Pedal Cinema event and the benefits this has to the school, and wider, community. The evening included a Q&A session with the MGC film makers, their mentor, Michelle Dado-Millynn and Yarra City Council Deputy Mayor Sarah McKenzie, where the idea of small changes having a big impact were discussed. The short film created by the MGC students will be included in an education program being developed by the Power of Activism team and shared nationally.

Term 4 will involve opportunities for Year 10 students to participate in Work Experience. Students should be organising these placements now for the first week of December. Year 10 students will also be completing Year 10 exams and, in some cases, Unit 2 exams in November. All Year 10 students and Year 9 students who are completing a VCE Early Access subject in 2026 will be participating in the Headstart program at the end of November.

Year 9

To wrap up Term 3, our Year 9 students took part in an exciting five day alternative camp based in the heart of the Melbourne CBD at the Victoria University City Campus. This immersive city experience provided students with the opportunity to explore learning outside the classroom through a variety of educational and cultural excursions.

Operating from our city hub on the 25th floor, students enjoyed panoramic views of Melbourne while engaging in workshops, group activities, and reflective sessions. The central location allowed easy access to a packed program of excursions, including:

  • SYN FM Radio Station – podcast recording experience
  • Melbourne Museum and State Library Victoria – cultural immersion and exploration
  • The Big Issue – discussion on homelessness and social responsibility
  • Street Art Tours – exploring urban art in Hosier Lane and ACDC Lane
  • ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) – media and digital art discovery
  • Eureka Skydeck – breathtaking views and a new perspective on the city
  • Hub Activities – RUOK day activities and Year 9 Trivia
  • Free time with friends – fostering independence and connection around the CBD

The week concluded with a lively Homegroup Performance Showcase, where students presented creative music performances. These performances were a highlight and demonstrated the engagement and teamwork that developed throughout the week.

Student behaviour was exceptional. Their maturity, respect, and conduct throughout the week were consistently praised by members of the public and venue staff. They represented our school with pride and integrity at every turn.

We are incredibly proud of the Year 9 cohort and look forward to continuing this momentum into the rest of the final term of the year.
