Welcome to Term Three

Welcome to Term 3! 

We would like to acknowledge the huge and positive semester one of terms 1 & 2. We have another exciting and engaging term  of learning ahead. This term will provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding, develop independence in their learning, and make connections between their studies and the wider world.

Specialist Times

Literacy Block

Reading

Students will be studying Lion: A Long Way Home Young Readers' Edition. Through this memoir, students will explore themes such as belonging, identity, family, resilience, survival, and hope. They will examine Saroo’s experiences of becoming lost as a child in India, his adoption into an Australian family, and his eventual search for and reunion with his birth family. Students will engage in discussions, reflections, and analysis of the text while making personal and global connections to the issues explored in the memoir.

Writing

Students will focus on memoirs and personal narratives. They will learn about the key features and structure of memoir writing, identify meaningful topics from their own lives, and develop their ability to write with detail and emotion. Throughout the term, students will experiment with sensory language, figurative language, dialogue, descriptive writing, and cohesive devices to enhance their writing. They will revise, edit, publish, and share a memoir that reflects an important experience or memory from their own lives.

Mathematics

Students will continue to strengthen their number skills by exploring decimals, percentages, probability, and units of measurement. Students will investigate multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of ten, making connections between decimals and percentages, and applying percentages to real-world financial situations. They will also conduct probability experiments and explore concepts of chance before moving into measurement, with a focus on area and perimeter. Throughout the term, students will continue to develop problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning through a variety of rich learning tasks.

Humanities

Our Humanities unit this term focuses on Geography, with a particular emphasis on Asia and our place within the region. Students will explore relative location, physical geography, population distribution, major cities, and daily life across a range of Asian countries. They will compare different environments and ways of life while developing a deeper understanding of the diversity of our neighbouring region. Students will then undertake an independent research project on a country of their choice, culminating in presentations and participation in our annual Amazing Race learning experience.

RRRR/Talking the Talk

Students will also continue participating in Respectful Relationships and Year 6 subsequent Talking the Talk sessions. These lessons support students in developing positive relationships, awareness of changes during puberty, effective communication skills, self-awareness, and strategies for navigating the social and emotional challenges that can arise during the final year of primary school.

First Nations Perspectives

First Nations perspectives will continue to be embedded throughout the curriculum. Students will engage with First Nations memoirs as mentor texts and explore historical and contemporary perspectives, including caring for Country and population changes over time. These learning experiences will help students deepen their understanding of Australia's history and the enduring cultures of First Nations Peoples.

Assessment

Throughout the term, students will complete a range of assessment tasks to demonstrate their learning and growth. This includes writing assessments, ongoing reading and comprehension tasks, mathematics assessments, inquiry projects, and classroom presentations. These assessments help teachers monitor progress and tailor learning experiences to meet students' needs.

Term 3 promises to be a busy and rewarding term filled with opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and celebrate their learning. We encourage families to continue supporting regular reading at home, discussing learning experiences with their children, and staying connected with school events throughout the term. Specialist Subjects 

Performing Arts

Students will be using choreographic techniques and devices to create a class dance for the 5/6 musical, The Wizard of Oz. We will also be exploring blocking, timing and dramatic reacting as we create background characters for the musical.

Physical Education

Students will use elastics to further develop their balance and jumping skills. They will build on prior knowledge of basic game strategies and apply them to different and more complex games.

Science

This term, students are beginning to look at physical science, exploring electrical energy and how it can be transferred and transformed.

Visual Arts

For the Hero’s Gallery at Art For All, inspired by Vincent Namatjira, students will create a “Hero” work by etching into a polystyrene block to create a print. They will embellish it with sewing and buttons.

Students will also discover the Hermannsberg Potters and their relationship with Albert Namatjira. Influenced by these Hermannsberg artists, they will model a clay pot, reflecting the world around them. 

French 

Bonjour tout le monde! I'm Kristen, your new French specialist teacher from Canada and I’m so excited to get started with everyone this term! This term our Year 6 students are researching a French-speaking place in the world, developing their vocabulary and communication skills as they prepare a final presentation.
