Term 2 in Grade 2

We are looking forward to welcoming back our Grade 2s and watching them pick up where they left off after Term 1. The Grade 2 team have been very impressed with the students’ abilities to apply the school values of Responsibility, Resilience, Respect and Belonging within their classrooms and their wider learning environment.

We look forward to welcoming our parent helpers into the classroom this term. Each teacher will be in touch shortly with those who expressed interest and have completed the inductions.

Grade 2 classes will also participate in the class assembly presentations later this term. Teachers will notify parents/carers of their week at a later date.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, through our Daily Review and explicit instruction, students will consolidate their knowledge of place value, with particular focus on renaming and partitioning 4-digit numbers. Addition and subtraction will be explored by using visual models, such as the bar model to assist students in their learning of the relationship between addition and subtraction. This will be accompanied by practising basic number facts to assist in solving challenging number problems. Students will explore grouping strategies with money to assist them in counting collections of coins. Time and fractions are a focus in Term 2, where students use fraction vocabulary as they practise telling the time to halves and quarters of the hour. Fractions are also explored through the use of varied shapes and collections. Length, mass and capacity units of measurement are practised over the span of Term 2, with engaging activities where students can demonstrate their understanding of different measurement units by solving addition and subtraction equations. Reading the time, counting coins and measuring different objects within your home over Term 2 can assist students with consolidating their knowledge and help them understand how we use Maths in everyday life.

Literacy

The Little Learners Love Literacy program will continue in Term 2, as many students are eager to begin new stages of the program. There will be a continued focus on decoding, fluency and comprehension. Through explicit instruction and daily practice, students will continue to develop their knowledge of well-formed sentences by learning new vocabulary, formatting techniques and adding detail to sentences by using adjectives and adverbs. Students will explore the genre of narrative in Term 2. They will learn to implement the 5 W’s (Who, What, Where, When, and Why) in sentences, understand the importance of beginning, middle and end structures in narratives, and practise effective writing processes by drafting, editing, revising, and publishing their work. The genre of procedural text writing will also be practised with the Grade 2s Unit of Work. Handwriting and spelling will continue to be a regular focus throughout Term 2. Students will participate in paired reading activities regularly, where they will read aloud with partners using a well-known text to them to practise fluency in their reading. This will provide students with opportunities to give feedback to their peers in a constructive and supportive environment.

Units of Work

In Term 2, students will explore the topic of Force within the Science Unit of knowledge. We will explore the questions and answers to what force is, the different types of force and how we see it and use it in everyday life. Students will explore how different strengths of pushes and pulls, spins, air pressure and buoyancy, can affect the movement of objects. The Grade 2 cohort will visit Science Works on Monday, 5th May to support their learning of how forces like push, pull and gravity can change the movement or shape of a toy. Students will learn how their toys work which will support our own design process later in the term when we design and build our own toys using recycled materials. Students will identify toys from different cultures that use the forces of push or pull and will have an exciting opportunity to design and create their own toy with a moveable part. They will evaluate their work and create a procedural text which can be presented to classmates. Throughout Term 2, students will continue to learn about respectful relationships where we will look at building positive relationships, stress management, positive gender relations, help seeking and consent.

We look forward to another fantastic term ahead!

Kind Regards,

The Grade Two Team
