Our revised roving music program at FWPS has started off well. In Term 2 the Preps, Year 1s and Year 2s will continue enjoying experiencing the music program in their regular classrooms.
Prep
In Term 2, now that the preps are more familiar with music class routines, they are building upon their knowledge of how hold and play a variety of small instruments, including hand percussion and ukuleles. They are also developing skills where no equipment is required, listening, singing, clicking, clapping and whistling. They are continuing to respond to the musical elements of fast and slow, high and low, long and short, soft and loud. Two songs we will be focussing on are “Gumtree Family” by Justine Clarke, and Silver Balloon, by Paul Jamieson.
Year 1
The Year 1s have started Term 2 by learning a partner hand clap game called Double-double and learning about the harp. They have constructed harps using boxes and rubber bands and formed a harp orchestra. The students have also been learning about the role of the conductor and the 4-beat conducting pattern. Our orchestra has been learning to focus on the tip of the conductor’s baton to stay in time. Next up, the students will be introduced to pitch maps and the C major scale, with singing, hand signals, using glockenspiels and learning the song “Pudding on the Hill” by Jon Madin.
Year 2
If you have heard a certain tooting sound coming from the Year 2 classrooms this term, it’s because the Year 2s have been introduced to the classic primary school wind instrument – the recorder. We are focussing on respect, consideration and control, learning to play quiet short notes, and be accurate with where to place fingers. In an exploration of short and long notes, the students have been communicating to each other using morse code on their recorders.
The Year 2s have also been learning conducting skills and using them to communicate to our recorder orchestra. The aim by the end of the term, is for the Year 2s to know how to play a variety of songs using the notes B, A and G including “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, “Hot Cross Buns” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.
