Z Club

Z Club hosted a special morning tea to thank and farewell Year 12 students who have helped over the last few years with fundraising. It has helped us purchase birthing kit components that we have assembled, which have then been distributed to places such as Nigeria, Uganda and DR Congo. These kits, at a cost of $5 per kit have been given to women living in and facing the most challenging of circumstances when they give birth. One kit can mean the difference between life and death.

We do appreciate the support they have shown our club during their time as leaders of the College. Freya Giles baked a celebration cake and members all contributed by bringing something to share. If you would like to know about Z Club, or become a member, please speak to our Co-Presidents Freya GIles or Poppy McKay in Year 10 or come and see Mrs Channon.

Z Club have also spent the last couple of days this week assembling some care packages ready to distribute to community service groups in our local region. We would really love more donations of face cloths, toothpastes and toothbrushes, so that we make some more before the end of the term.

Vinnies

After a long hiatus the O'Connor Vinnies students made a welcome return to Uniting (formerly Autumn Lodge).

The students met with the residents in the dining room, serving their meals and drinks and engaging in conversation.

The O'Connor conference of St Vincent de Paul has been working in the O'Connor and wider community for over thirty years.

Students who participate in the work of the group develop a deeper understanding of the Social Justice values of the Catholic church and learn how to live those values, putting others first.

In addition to our Autumn Lodge visits the group organizes the Vinnies Winter and Christmas Appeals. This year O'Connor supported the Vinnies Sleepout and with the Help of the O'Connor community raised over $1500 which will be used in Armidale to support the work of Freeman House in Armidale.

All students are encouraged  and welcome to join the Vinnies Conference and "make a difference."

Assembly

We held our whole school assembly Monday in our new performing arts centre for the very first time. The first time we fully utilized the space and it looked amazing fully set up.

We look forward to being able to continue to use this space for a variety of events.

A huge congratulations to all our award recipients at assembly also.

John Harris who attended a Rotary public speaking competition in Inverell. John participated in two sections - one for prepared speeches and also the impromptu section.

Vietnam Commemorative Service

Thank you to Bernard and Richard May for representing O'Connor at the Armidale Vietnam Commemorative Service on the 18th of August.

Debating

CONGRATULATIONS to our junior team of Rachael, Laura and Edith who won their debate in the next stage of the Australian National Virtual Debating Competition against Emmanuel College, Sydney.

The adjudicator awarded all points to O’Connor for their strong arguments and superior rebuttals as they debated the negative ‘that Australia should lower its carbon emissions by using nuclear power’. They now move onto the next stage of the national competition.

Well done girls we are very proud of you!
