On Sunday, the annual Head of the Lake Rowing Regatta was held at a picturesque Lake Wendouree. Excellent conditions meant for some excellent racing on the day.
In the First V, our crew of SPC boys coached by David O’Docherty and comprising of Paddy O’Brien, Nedd Bennett, Angus Murfett, Henry Reinehr and Jarvis McLean raced brilliantly to bring home the Head of the Lake First's Boys' Title. St Patricks College had a hugely successful regatta winning all but two races, where we finished second.
A more detailed report will be available in the next edition of The Crest.
On Wednesday, three SPC students — George Wills, Hugo Johnston and Ren Asai — travelled to the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre to compete in the BAS Tennis Singles Finals.
The day started with typical Ballarat weather; it looked lovely outside from behind the glass however it was a little brisk once one braved the elements.
In the semi-final of the Rob Benoit Cup (Boys Years 7-9 Singles), Ren Asai defeated his opponent from Grammar, 8-0, in a clinical performance.
Having won his way through to the final, Ren Asai came up against an opponent from BCC.
In a dominate performance, Ren won his match 6-0, 6-1 to bring home the Rob Benoit Cup for SPC.
To make Ren’s feat even more remarkable, he has now won the Rob Benoit Cup in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9!
Congratulations Ren Asai, you represented the College with great determination and skill!
It was an all SPC affair in the semifinal of the McNeil Cup (Boys Years 10-12 Single) between Hugo Jonston and George Wills.
It was a nip-tuck, ding-dong battle in the early games of the match – it was indeed a really, really tight tussle.
George Wills started well to lead 2-0 after the first two games. Hugo Johnston fought back hard however, to win the match 8-4.
Having won through to the final Hugo played a Damascus College opponent in the final.
Hugo was able to take a game off the eventual winner, however his determined effort couldn’t prevail of his older opponent, and he came runner up in the McNeil Cup.
Yesterday , Thursday 29 February, the College Athletics team competed in the 2024 ACC Athletics Carnival at the Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park.
Once again our boys acquitted themselves commendably and represented the College with distinction.
At day's end St Patrick's finished second in the overall aggregate in Division 2, Winning the Senior and U17 aggregates, finishing second in all other areas.
Some notable performances on the day included:
I would like to thank all staff involved in the preparation and implementation of the event. Jason Lappin and Simon Dwyer for their direction, preparation and leadership. Thanks is also extended to Andrew Chamings, Amanda Rossato, Shane Hayes, Damian Kinnersley and Carly Twaits for assisting with athletics trials and supervising the events and the organisation and supervision of athletes on the day.
When more results come to hand I shall forward them on.

We travelled to Vic Park and played on grounds 6 and 7 for the second consecutive week. The weather conditions were very pleasant this week. We had very good numbers with 16 boys turning out for SPC Gold. Max and Ben Brodie doing their best to include all boys by batting, bowling, or keeping. Thanks to both lads in showing leadership and willingness to take responsibility.

Fielding: The wicket keeping was solid all game with two lads sharing the duties. The fielding was very good with four catches taken by J. Costigan, J. Knobel, R. Castles and C. Plummer. Well done boys. The boys performed very well in the field again this week in a very even effort.
The boys are starting to combine as a team with boys from different classes and year levels. Josh and I look forward to seeing the boys develop as a team over the coming weeks. Congratulations to the players in managing themselves well on and off the playing field. Thanks again to Mr. Morris for his presence and taking care of the umpiring duties for the afternoon.
Good cricketing,
Mr Kent and Mr Morris
SPC Green v SPC Blue Round 2
In excellent conditions SPC Green took on SPC Blue in Round 2 of this year’s BAS junior cricket competition. Blue ran out comfortable winners 3/115 to 8/59.
Notable performances from the bowlers for SPC Green were Abel Giles 1/3, Hamish Mulcahy 1/9 and Chandan Nayak 1/10. Many others bowled their two overs for only a few runs. The batting was led by Tom Goodson who made 12 not out and Harry Clark who made 10 not out.
Thanks to Jack O’Brien for setting up the grounds. A huge thanks to Robyn Cocomazzo for scoring and assisting with the boys, it certainly makes life easier with two of us.

We played on our home deck this afternoon with Blue batting on Main Oval and Gold batting on Hill Oval. It’s great to play at home and on turf, a fantastic experience for the lads. The weather conditions were very pleasant again this week, and the ovals were ‘a picture’. Both teams had good numbers which allowed the fielding sides to place good fields.
Highlights for Blue
Batting: H. Williams 30 runs retired, C. Colby 24 retired, R. Cook 20 retired, R. Aggett 16 retired.
Bowling: B. Jarvis, H. Williams and C. Molloy all picked up two wickets, with L. Sheehan taking one wicket.
From Blues perspective
It is good to see the continuing development of many of the players. The encouragement of the Year 7s and those that don’t play club cricket on weekends is wonderful. There is a great team spirit amongst the Blue Boys.
The bowling has been the Blue team’s strength this season. With only 7 extras during the innings, puts us at a great advantage. Well done boys.
A huge thanks to Miss Mcarthy who is becoming a dab hand at scoring and making sure that I can count to six! Next week we travel to Vic Park to take on Grammar Blue, it will be a good test.
Highlights for Gold
Batting: R. Jew 14 runs retired & N. Perera 14 runs top scored, M. Brodie 13 not out, U. Gambhir 11 retired and X. Deane 10 retired.
Bowling: 12 boys bowled this week. Wicket takers were R. Jew and N. Perera with good performances from M. Brodie, J. Knobel and X. Deane with the ball.
Fielding: The wicket keeping was solid all game with two lads, U. Gambhir and B. Brodie sharing the duties. The fielding was very good with one catch taken X. Costigan. The boys performed very well in the field again this week with the ground fielding a highlight.
From Gold’s point of view, although we were soundly beaten the bowling was far more accurate with far less extras recorded. Also, five boys batted this afternoon for the first time this season which was very pleasing as participation is key in the early years at SPC. There were some disappointed lads after the game as there is a strong will to win evident within the team. Captain Max, Dane LaFranchi and I all urged the boys to persevere, and our next game is ‘another day’. Congratulations to the players in managing themselves well on and off the playing field. Thanks again to Mr Morris for his presence and taking care of the umpiring duties for the afternoon.
Good cricketing,
Mr Kent, Mr Morris, Mr Leviston and Ms McCarthy
St Patrick’s College is once again excited to join forces with Loreto College to compete against St Joseph’s College Geelong, and Sacred Heart College Geelong respectively, to play the “Respect Cup” on Wednesday, 6 March.
The initiative has been timed around International Woman’s Day (IWD) with the event promoting the importance of gender equality and respectful relationships.
The combined scores for both games will determine the overall winner between the Ballarat and Geelong teams. In 2021 and 2022 the Ballarat schools triumphed, but Geelong bounced back in 2023 with the boys having an extremely exciting draw against St Joey's and Loreto losing to Sacred Heart.
Incorporated within the Jumper design are indigenous symbols that signify respectful relationships. Federation University has very kindly sponsored the playing apparel for both schools, whilst the City of Ballarat has very generously supplied the use of Mars Stadium for the day.
The event promises to be a great afternoon and we invite all in our community to attend and support this most worthy initiative. If you are unable to make it in person, the game will be live streamed. The live stream link will be uploaded to our St Patrick’s College’s Facebook page prior to the game.
The best form of communication we have with parent/guardians is via the Parent Access Module (PAM). Students require permission to participate in all sport. Parent/guardians will receive the information through a PAM activity permission. Please ensure that you read the information prior to giving permission and that you also talk to students about the information.
The daily messages are one of the best ways we can distribute information to students about sports that are on offer and where sign up meetings will be held. Students should check the daily messages regularly.
Once students have signed up for a sport, we will be adding them into a MS Teams group where they can communicate directly with their coach. Students must communicate with their coach if they are unavailable for a match so we can find a replacement to ensure we have a full team for each match.
If students are unsure of how to sign up for a sport or want more information, they can visit sports staff in the gymnasium.
All sport uniforms can be purchased at the College Shop. Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing. For example, the 1st XI cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also, remember to wear sunscreen at all times.
I wish all students and coaches the best in 2024. Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St Patrick’s College is steeped in rich sporting tradition, and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours.
I would like to thank all of the staff at St Patrick's that support the Sport Program, it truly is amazing the amount of sporting opportunities that we provide for our students. This is a great school with an incredible history.
Please do not hesitate to contact me (jlappin@stpats.vic.edu.au) or our Sports Administrator Mr Simon Dwyer (sdwyer@stpats.vic.edu.au) at the College with any questions.
