Welcome back to Term 3.

In this week’s Networks, I continue to reflect on Donvale’s Educational Creed and the third principle entitled Christian Schools.

In this section we read:

"As Christ is the Saviour and King of the whole of human life we understand by a Christian School such an educational institution in which not only is Christ honoured by prayer and study of the Bible, but all subjects are taught by the light of God’s revelation in Jesus Christ contained in the Old and New Testaments. For such Christian Schools we as parents claim all freedom in the field of education, as long as this education takes place in obedience to the requirements of God’s word and in adherence to legitimate governmental standards and provisions."

A Christian school, therefore, is not simply a school where Christianity is taught; it is a school where every aspect of learning, character formation, community life and service is shaped by the belief that Jesus Christ is Lord of all.

We believe that Jesus Christ is Lord over every part of life and therefore every area of learning. Students are encouraged to see God's truth, wisdom, order, beauty and purpose reflected throughout creation and human culture. Whether studying Mathematics, Science, History, Literature, the Arts or Sport, students are taught to ask how their learning helps them understand God, themselves, the world and their responsibility within it.

Because we believe the Bible is God's Word, we want students to develop a deep understanding of its message and significance. We encourage students not merely to know Bible stories but to understand the overarching story of God's redemptive work in history and the central place of Christ within that story.

This requires careful reading, thoughtful study and a willingness to engage honestly with Scripture's challenging passages and teachings. Students are encouraged to ask questions, wrestle with complex issues and learn how to interpret Scripture faithfully and responsibly. Biblical teaching is often counter-cultural, and our students need to learn how to participate positively in society, loving and serving others while remaining grounded in biblical truth.

Christians understand the world through the biblical story of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Restoration. God created the world and declared it good. Human beings were made in God's image to know Him, care for creation and live in relationship with one another. Yet humanity's rejection of God brought brokenness into every aspect of life. The Bible calls this sin. As a result, our relationships with God, with one another and with creation have been affected. The good news is that God did not leave humanity in this condition. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has made reconciliation and restoration possible. This means that every person's value and dignity is grounded in being created and loved by God.

At Donvale, we want students to understand that their identity is not ultimately found in academic performance, sporting success, social status or personal achievement. Instead, students are encouraged to see themselves as people created, known and loved by God. As they grow in their understanding of Christ, they are challenged to develop character marked by humility, courage, wisdom, compassion, integrity and service.

This statement also recognises the important role of parents in the education of their children. Christian parents should be free to choose a school that reflects and supports their faith and values. At the same time, Christian schools honour their responsibility to meet all relevant educational requirements and standards set by government authorities.

In all that we do, we seek to provide an education that is distinctly Christian, academically excellent and centred on helping students discover who they are in Christ and how they are called to serve in God's world.
