Sustainability

Last week Pathways Sustainability students participated in an experiment to learn what happens when an oil spill occurs in the ocean. The oil covered the entire surface of the container and any feathers in the water became saturated in oil showing what happens to birdlife. Students used detergent to break up the oil and noticed what happened when we dropped polyester material squares into the water. Synthetic fabrics include petroleum chemicals.
Students noticed that the polyester squares were soaking up the oil. Polypropylene a synthetic material floats on water and is a substance often used to clean up oil spills.
Pathways students harvested tomatoes and carrots from the garden the Horticulture students prepared last year. We shared the tomatoes around and used the carrots in the Food Technology class in our muffin recipe.
