Year 1 Snapshot of Learning – Exploring Shapes in Numeracy

This term, our Year 1 students have been busy investigating shapes in the world around them. We began by becoming Shape Detectives, searching our classroom and school environment for shapes in everyday objects. From clocks and windows to buttons and books, the students were surprised to learn just how many shapes surround us each day! 1 Blue used their very own shape magnifying glasses to help them zoom in on the details!

The Year 1s then began learning the official names given to different two-dimensional (2D) shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons and many more. To put our new knowledge to the test, students created their own shape pizzas—each slice topped with a variety of shapes. This hands-on activity helped us practise recognising, naming and describing 2D shapes in a fun (and delicious-looking!) way.

After identifying, naming and describing a range of two-dimensional (2D) shapes, the Year 1 students moved into combining these shapes to create new figures, patterns and pictures. 1 Green had a wonderful time designing their own imaginative 2D scenes - houses, gardens, rockets, animals and more - all built entirely from circles, squares, rectangles and triangles! This encouraged creativity as well as an understanding of how shapes can work together.

To conclude our learning on 2D shapes and to introduce our new unit on three-dimensional (3D) shapes, the Year 1 students used AI technology to transform their 2D drawings into lifelike 3D shape creatures! After first experiencing this in Art with Mrs. Dabb and their work being showcased at our recent Art Show, the enthusiasm was high and the creativity was flowing. The children loved seeing their drawings come to life - proving just how much fun you can have when playing and experimenting with shape!
