🚀 Science & Culture: Up, Up, and Away with Foundation!

Our Foundation students have been soaring into their science by exploring the fascinating world of things that fly and fall!

To kick off their learning, students looked at traditional Indigenous toys made by children from Sunday Island, located off the coast of Western Australia. They put on their investigator hats to identify different natural materials used in these toys. A big favorite was the pandanus propeller, a brilliant traditional flying toy crafted from native plants.

Inspired by this ingenious design, the children made their own "Koara Propellers" using just paper and a paper clip! Once construction was complete, we headed outside to test our creations in the fresh air. There were plenty of smiles, giggles, and flying propellers as the kids watched gravity and air resistance in action.

Year 1/2

🎶Making Music with Recycled Materials 

Our Year 1/2 students have been busy exploring sound in STEAM! After learning about volume and pitch, students put their knowledge into practice by designing and creating their very own musical instruments using recycled materials.

The students had to think carefully about how their instruments could demonstrate different volumes and pitches. We were amazed by the wonderful variety of instruments they created, including guitars, flutes, drums and shakers.

It was fantastic to see the students using their creativity, problem-solving skills and understanding of sound to turn everyday recycled materials into instruments. We finished our project by testing and playing our creations, making plenty of wonderful sounds along the way!

Well done, Year 1/2, on your imaginative and creative instrument designs! 🎵

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 Marble Run Challenge

Our Year 3/4 students are currently designing and building their very own marble runs in STEAM! Students are putting their knowledge of push and pull forces into action while exploring the invisible force of gravity that helps guide the marble through their creations. They are testing, modifying and problem-solving as they work to create a marble run that gets their marble moving successfully from start to finish!

National Science Week

It’s National Science Week, and to celebrate, some of the greatest STEAM superstars from history have decided to pay a visit to Ormond Primary School! You’ll find these incredible innovators and scientists located just outside the STEAM doors, each sharing a little blurb about their life, discoveries and contributions to the world. Keep an eye out as you walk past and see how many STEAM superstars you can recognise!
