        Lesson Plan: Canteen Routine to Ensure Safety and Respect

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to : be safe and respectful when we go to the canteen

It will look like: 

• Lining up without pushing and shoving
• Waiting patiently and quietly
• Showing appreciation by saying please and thank you
• Having my money ready and only buying something for myself
• Sitting in the hall or under the trees to eat
• Using the bin for my rubbish
• Limit my spending to one food and one drink

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour

Examples

Lining up without pushing, shoving or touching others

Being prepared with money and order

Saying please and thank you

Please may I have…

Placing the money into the server’s hand

Showing appreciation for the volunteers and using their name if you know it. Example: Hello _______   Thank you for helping us _______   

Not complaining about the food or drink

Putting rubbish in the bin

Sitting in the hall or under the trees to eat before going to play

Bringing money to spend only if your parents approve  (integrity)

Buying only one food and one drink item

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Running to the canteen and pushing and shoving

Standing in a huddle and crowding people in

Crowding around the counter so that volunteers cannot hear or see people properly 

Pushing and shoving and touching others

Waiting until you are at the canteen before deciding what you want to order

Forgetting to use manners or demanding food or drink

Pushing the money across the counter

Being rude or disrespectful to the volunteers

Complaining about the food or drink, sulking or getting upset about the choices

Leaving rubbish on the ground or pushing it behind the toilets, in the garden or under the library

Taking food to the playground

Eating while playing

Asking others to give you money, food or drink or to buy them for you  (integrity)

Buying more than one food and one drink and lining up multiple times to spend more money

Jumping the queue without permission
