Auslan Report

Grade Prep
In weeks 7 and 8 of Term 3, Grade Preps will learn the topics About Me and Clothes. In the About Me lesson, students will practise fingerspelling their name and sign their features such as hair and eye colour. The lesson activity will also include drawing a self portrait and introducing themselves in Auslan.
When learning about Clothes, students will participate in a ‘Colour Your Clothes’ activity where they will need to colour in the sheet with a basic clothing outline like a T-shirt and pants. Grade Preps will be encouraged to share and sign the clothes they added and coloured. For example: T shirt blue. Students will also participate in signing the Clothing Poem
Grade 1
In weeks 7 and 8 of Term 3, Grade 1’s will learn about On Holiday and HOLM NMF. In the On Holiday lesson, students will play the SNAP Game where they will work in pairs with holiday pictures in front of them. The teacher will sign the holiday signs and students snap by placing their hand over the correct picture as quickly as they recognise the sign. e.g. teacher signs ‘towel’ and the students attempt to be first to ‘snap’ the picture of the towel.
When learning about HOLM NMF, Grade 1’s will revise the handshapes and signs taught. They will discuss how when the orientation is changed, it changes the meaning of the sign. Students will focus on using the hand and body and changing the orientation such as forward (out/away from person), back (in/ towards person), side (2 sides, facing left or right) up or down.
Grades 2-6
In weeks 7 and 8 of Term 3, Grades 2-6 will learn the topics Deaf Culture and Signs of Purpose. In the Deaf Culture lesson students will discuss what they saw in the video they will watch. The focus will be on various uses of technology and the different needs that deaf people have. The activity will entail looking at Hearing Aids and Cochlear implants and how they work. Students will look at all the parts of the devices and label them on a worksheet.
When learning about Signs of Purpose, Grade 2 students will do a Can/Can’t activity. This will involve students brainstorming a list of things that students can or can’t do. Some of the things can include: riding a bike, swimming, riding a horse, skateboarding, etc. Students will need to sign whether they can or can’t do an activity and also use constructed action/mime to role play the particular activity they have selected. The Grade 3/4 and 5/6 students will do a similar activity with the Grade 3/4 students focusing on Want/Don’t Want and Grade 5/6 students focussing on Auslan clauses including Can’t be bothered…….but should….because. All learning activities will encourage students to express themselves using Auslan.
Keep updated on learning Auslan each fortnight in our Partners in Learning Newsletter during Term 3.
