Sustainability

THURSDAY MAY 8th is INTERNATIONAL COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK

This year’s theme is ‘Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost.’

Why compost?

  • Reduces waste and recycles organic materials.
  • Protects the environment.
  • Improves the soil.
  • Promotes healthy plant growth.

Some good programs to watch with your children:

  • Peppa Pig episode seven from season 3, The Very Wormy Compost Heap.
  • ABC Today’s the Day with dirt girl – episode two compost.
  •  Gardening Australia Junior: Magic Compost, series 1 Compost Cauldron.

    COMPOSTING MADE EASY

To make a good compost the ratio is 2 to 4 parts “brown” material e.g. dried leaves, small twigs (carbon rich) to one part “green” material e.g. grass clippings, food scraps (nitrogen rich)

Layer organic materials and add soil and water. Check regularly and use a shovel to turn over the pile to aerate.  Over time the materials break down and produce a lovely soil to apply to your veggie patch and flower beds.

Worms do not like meat scraps, whole eggs, dairy products, garlic, and citrus.
