Principal's Report

Dear families and friends of MPW,

Thank you to the many parents who volunteered some time on Saturday to support our Referendum Sausage Sizzle fundraiser and to those families who donated to the Cake Stall. It was a quieter day than the last two election days, however there was a steady stream of people purchasing both from the cake stall and the sausage sizzle.

The referendum is the first that Australia has had in over two decades and it highlights the importance of referendums in our democratic system of government. It is important that people can express their opinions on key issues, especially those of great national importance.

I would like to acknowledge that there will be different responses to the outcome of the referendum not being passed for our families, students, staff and community. Supports are available for students and staff who may be impacted should they need it. The Premier and the Minister for Treaty and First Peoples put out a joint statement on Voice that you may be interested in reading.

Swimming Program

Our 3/4 students began their swimming lessons this week and have had a great time over the past two days. Swimming with our 3/4 students continues into next week and then our 5/6's begin their lessons over weeks 5 and 6. The goal of the swimming lessons is to ensure students leave MPW with basic swimming skills including swimming 50m continuously and awareness of water safety and simple rescues.

Uniform Reminders

A reminder that this term for offsite school related activities students are required to wear a school logoed top.

The uniform becomes fully compulsory  from the beginning of the 2024 school year. Next year, the older yellow polo tops can continue to be worn, and we will transition to the new navy-based polos for 2025 and beyond.

Some key points from the school’s dress code policy include:- It is expected that a logoed school uniform top will be worn to school and on identified offsite school events.

- Uniform bottoms should be consistent with the navy-blue colour aspects of the uniform and are not required to be logoed.

- Shoes should be closed toe and fit for the day’s activities.

- Uniform items and clothing must comply with the school’s SunSmart policy

- Additional layers of clothing may be worn underneath the uniform for added warmth

- Closed toe footwear must be worn at school to comply with safety regulations

- Opportunities for fundraising days or out of uniform events coordinated with JSC will allow students to attend school out of uniform on advertised days but must be appropriate and continue to comply with SunSmart and safety expectations.

- The school will offer the year 6 students the opportunity to design and purchase unique tops in recognition of their final year at Moonee Ponds West. This top is considered part of the school uniform in their final year.

School uniform items can be purchased directly from ‘Lowes.’ Price lists, information on articles of clothing in various styles and combinations of navy blue and gold are available from Lowes Highpoint Shopping Centre or online at https://www.lowes.com.au/schools-online/mooneeponds-west-primary-school

The school also operates a lost property and second-hand uniform opportunity for parents.

The full dress code can be found on our website. https://www.mooneewestps.vic.edu.au/page/225/School-Uniform

Feeling Unwell?

Over the past fortnight we have noticed more cases of different viruses, colds and illnesses present around the school in both students and staff.  To help keep our community well, at school we continue to:

  • encourage students to wash and sanitise their hands regularly
  • continue to use air purifiers across the school in spaces used by staff and students
  • encourage students to cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing into their elbow
  • encouraging those unwell to stay at home and consult a general practitioner (GP) or health professional as needed

Upcoming Curriculum Day

Finally, a reminder our final Curriculum Day for the year is scheduled for Monday 6th November. On this day teachers will be focussing on reviewing assessment tasks, moderating student work and writing Semester 2 reports. Camp Australia will be providing their services to assist families on the day.

Regards,

Jarrod Sutton
