This term the senior students have launched into exploring all things space!

Our science focus has taken us on an exciting journey beyond Earth as we explore planets, rockets, astronauts and the mysteries of our solar system. We began by designing our own planets, thinking creatively about what life might look like and what conditions would exist there. From there, we travelled back in time to learn about the historic Apollo 11 moon landing and the incredible achievement of humans setting foot on the Moon for the first time.

Students have investigated the importance of rockets and how they work, including the process of jettisoning. After designing their own rockets, students conducted research on a real rocket of their choice, discovering how each one helps to explore and understand our universe.

We also explored what it takes to live and work in space by learning about astronauts and their special space suits. Students enjoyed watching videos of astronauts Suni and Butch, who were trapped in space for nine months, as they shared insights about daily life on the International Space Station and the challenges they faced when their spacecraft malfunctioned.

We are now looking closer to home, investigating how the Earth’s rotation and orbit create day and night, and how the tilt of the Earth affects our seasons across the equator.

It has been an out-of-this-world learning experience, and the students have been curious, creative and eager to explore the wonders of space!
