Activities with AAC - a new lunchtime program

This term, we started a new lunchtime program on Tuesdays called “Activities with AAC”.

We have interacted with mini robots, played ice-cream shops, read books and, most importantly, chatted with AAC.

AAC at Naranga

Students at Naranga communicate in lots of different ways.  Some students use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). This means they have a communication system that they use instead of, or together with, their voice. This group gives students an opportunity to meet other students across the school who use AAC, to learn new ways to communicate and to practice using their AAC system more.

Some examples of AAC tools are:

Speech Generating Devices
Core boards
Sign language
Communication books

What can you do?

If your child asks about AAC devices…

Tell them that some people use their voice to talk, some people use a device, some people use their hands.  Everyone communicates differently.

You meet someone (child or adult) using AAC…

Listen and give them time to talk.

You think your child might benefit from AAC…

Ask your community Speech Pathologist or contact Kyria Morgan at school.
