Year 8 XSEL 

Year 8s have been learning about Hope in XSEL, and have produced a wall of Hope with quotes from some famous leaders.

Dental Van Term 4 Week 1

The Australia Smile Group dental van is visiting Mirboo North Secondary in Term 4, Week 1 (5th October – 9th October 2026).      Paper consents will be sent out in the next few days. I have attached the online consent forms today.  All paper copies to be returned to the front office.

Australian Smile Group provides dental services under Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) via Medicare Bulk Billing meaning No Out of Pocket Cost Involved. CDBS provides financial funding of $1095 per child every 2 calendar years for ELIGIBLE children between the age of 2-17 years. If your child is not eligible for CDBS, we will provide complimentary oral health screening for your child at no charge.

Year 11 Chemistry

It is that time of year again!  The senior chemistry students are designing their own experiments using titrations.  We are looking forward to their poster presentations on their findings.

School for Student Leadership

On Friday 19th of June, I visited the students at the Don Valley campus for Student Leaders.  They have spent the whole of term 2 living with 35 other students from across Victoria, at a residential camp for leadership.  For their project, they will be painting a tree blue for the blue tree appeal to raise awareness for mental health in the town of Mirboo North. 

These 5 students have grown in confidence and public speaking, challenging themselves daily.  We look forward to welcoming them back for term 3 and hearing more of their experience.

The School for Student Leadership (SSL) is a unique, term-long residential outdoor education program. It focuses heavily on personal development, team collaboration, and leadership skills. Music Soiree 

A Spectacular First Term 3 Soirée

On Tuesday, 2nd September, our school community came together for our first instrumental concert for a very long time; the Term 3 Soirée. The word soirée is French and means an evening gathering, usually featuring music and conversation. As this was our first instrumental concert, we wanted to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where students, families, staff and community members could share in the joy of live music.

The evening was a huge success, with more than 70 parents, family members, teachers and members of the wider community attending. This wonderful turnout created the sense of closeness we had hoped for and made the occasion particularly special for our performers.

Our students were fantastic! They performed with courage, enthusiasm, and growing confidence, proudly sharing the skills they have developed through their instrumental lessons, ensemble rehearsals and practice. We saw ensemble performances from the concert band, junior band, guitar ensemble, and vocal group as well as many students taking the stage as solo or duo performers. Being onstage without the support of others beside you can be a nerve-wracking experience, but students demonstrated their incredible strength and love of what they do. Well done! 

A special thank you goes to Jacob Manning for sharing his wonderful piano skills throughout the evening. We also sincerely thank our instrumental teachers, Justin Abicare, Roy John, Nick Beale and Gerard Evans, who work tirelessly to support our music students, and Dee Franssen, our new Music Coordinator, for putting the evening together, initiating the vocal group, and supporting all music students to work collaboratively, pursue self-motivated practice, and have the freedom to to take ownership of their craft.

Most importantly, congratulations to every student who performed. Your hard work, practice, bravery, and dedication made our first soirée an evening to remember. We look forward to seeing our school’s music program, and our talented young musicians, continue to grow!

Hero’s Journey Article – Year 9 English

The Call To Adventure…

Last term, year 9 English students undertook the incredibly challenging assignment of writing novellas for English. For those that don’t know, a novella is a short novel. 

Using the ‘hero’s journey’ archetypical structure made famous by Joseph Campbell, author of the book ‘The Hero of a Thousand Faces’, the students of MNSC conceptualised, planned and created their own books, which they ultimately printed and bound together (as seen in the photo below) to finally present in the school library for all to see.

For the assignment students were welcome to choose their own genre, characters, settings and plot points, so long as their main character was able to follow the various challenges laid out in the hero’s journey template, such as… ‘the call to adventure’ (the stage where the hero first gets the opportunity to solve the problem presented at the story’s beginning), ‘meet the mentor’ (the stage where the hero gets the help they need to go on the journey or face their fears) and ‘the return home’ (the stage where the hero finally returns to their normal life, hopefully successful in their quest and a little wiser for their efforts!

We had science fiction, melodrama, rites of passage, fantasy, tragedy and comedy tales told. We had zombies, sociopathic running coaches, mutated scientists, murderous queens and much more. The depth and variety were truly a pleasure to behold and for the most part, students felt very proud of their efforts, some students writing well over seven thousand words, with one writing a tale over ten thousand!

Novellas are currently on display in the Mirboo North Secondary College’s library for the next week or so, though some of our lovely students have been gracious enough for extracts from their books to be shared for you here and can be read below.

Ella Williams – ‘Somewhere between here & Tuscany’

“Elisa Napoleon, y’know, the famous artist? You two look alike, like really alike.” I didn’t think I would hear those words tonight.

“Yeah, yeah, I do that’s my mum. How did you know that?”

“You’re joking right? You’re not really her daughter, I mean you two look almost identical.”

“I’m telling the truth look.” I pull a photo from out my wallet; It’s an old photo of me and mum.

“Woah, never thought I’d meet a famous person’s daughter at a party.”

“What do you mean famous?” I ask eager to know why this strange boy decided to talk to me.

“Your mother was very well known before she moved to Colorado around three years ago. Our mothers new each other very well. My mother still talks to me about yours. I think we have a few paintings of hers around my house.” This information was of course new to me.

“Thank you,” I said.

“For what?”

“I know almost nothing about my mother… it’s so hard to ask my dad anything about her. Since she passed, he won’t speak a word of her, he must be heartbroken. So, it’s nice to learn anything about her, from anyone.” It’s almost as if a weight had just been lifted of my shoulders, I’ve never had anyone to talk too so openly like this before…

Daemond Gazzard – ‘The Other Side of The Wall’

The year is 2049 and massive leaps in human technology has allowed humanity to thrive via transformation of waste matter into rarer, more useful materials. This drove humanity into a golden age where we thrived on our planet, slowing climate change and raising the global life expectancy by at least ten years. These progressions boomed the population and gave way to massive advancements in new tech with unveilings in augmented limbs, ocular implants and superhuman feats. This dream very quickly became reality and man soon merged with machine in many beautiful ways… Olympians with the agility of a leopard, men with the strength of a god… humanity birthed anew, ascending on wings of steel and silicon overnight… They hailed the miracle… forgetting darkness always prevails over hope...

Oliver Young – ‘The Sun Child’

“Three... two... ONE!” he counted down as he charged the fire for a fifth time that night.

Then they were off, moving at incredible speeds through the sky. Both Gabe and Elise’s hair whipped around from the wind. Elise felt amazing; she had never seen anything quite like this before. The sun was just on the horizon making the sky yellow and orange, and the treetops were starting to come into view as they left the steep, rugged mountains behind. Who knew the world could have been this beautiful outside of the Sun tribe? Gabe looked behind him to see Elise with the biggest smile in the world. It must have been contagious, however, because when he looked back in front of him, he too started to smile. And as they went further across the forest, he thought to himself…

 Maybe I am... a true sunchild…

Ryleigh Cardona – ‘A Lady’s Guide To Castle Secrets’

Suddenly, Francesca felt all of the fear leaving her body. Instead, a fiery anger burned in her chest. How dare this old hag even attempt to seem morally superior?

               Eyes narrowing, Francesca cut off Madalena, “Then I would be right to assume that organising the murder of a woman – let alone multiple – who serves the crown is also against the law?” she scoffed, glaring at the queen openly. Steadily, Francesca pulled out the pendant from her pocket and pointed to the golden crest, “Doesn’t this look familiar?”

               Madalena froze for a moment, her icy blue eyes widening. She opened her mouth, her voice coming out in a shrill yell, “Where did you-?”
