Activities and Events

Garden Club

Mrs Foster and our enthusiastic Garden Club members have been very busy tending to our vibrant school garden. A bountiful harvest is well underway as the students pick pumpkins, bok choy, eggplant and lettuces. The Canteen has been enjoying having fresh lettuce leaves to use for lunches.

Fruit break scraps are added daily to our compost to create a rich, nutrient-filled soil. This compost is being used for a new crop of seedlings, including kohlrabi, English spinach, radish and daikon.

The garden is also flourishing with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, silver beet, onions, parsley, coriander and an array of flowers that we cannot wait to see bloom in Spring.

Garden Club meets three times a week, with Mrs Foster inviting a different group of students to participate each day. The students love getting their hands dirty and especially enjoy taking fresh vegetables and garden goodies home with them.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week

Last week, we acknowledged National Sorry Day on Monday, 26th May, a time to honour the strength of the Stolen Generation Survivors and reflect on how we can support healing in our nation. We also observed National Reconciliation Week from 27th May to 3rd June. This is a time to learn about our shared history and how we can work together towards reconciliation. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions and activities, helping them understand the importance of this week.

Celebrating Our 140th Birthday and Catholic Schools Week

Friday 30th May was big day of celebration at our school! We combined Catholic Schools Week with a very special milestone - 140 years of Catholic education in Narrabri! The event brought together students, staff, families, and community members for a joyful day of reflection and celebration.

A special highlight of the day was welcoming two wonderful families with four living generations who have attended St Francis Xavier’s School for their education. The Smith Family legacy includes Myra, her son Dennis, his son Justin and now Justin’s children, Mary and Flynn, who are current students. Similarly, the Duncan Family’s story begins with Marie, followed by her son Christopher, his daughters Candice and Claudia, and now their daughters, Blair and Elsie.

Our School Band entertained guests with performances by the Brass Ensemble, playing Kum Ba Yah, and the Flute Ensemble with Scotch Dance. Kindergarten were very enthusiastic as they sang and danced to The Butterfly Song (If I Were a Butterfly).

Following the assembly, families thoroughly enjoyed a stroll through the Library’s historical memorabilia display, explored student work in open classrooms and relaxed together for lunch on the lawn.

We were excited to open the library on Monday for visitors to explore the historical display. It was a pleasure to share this memorabilia with members of our school community and reflect together on 140 years of cherished memories. A huge thank you to everyone who generously provided items for the display.

Music Program and School Band

The St Francis Xavier’s Music Program offers students in Years 3 to 6 the opportunity to explore and develop their musical talents. Students enjoy weekly lessons with Ms Rosemary Smith and can learn a range of instruments including flute, clarinet, trombone, trumpet and percussion. Their small group lessons foster confidence, teamwork and a lifelong love of music.

A standout feature of our program is the St Francis Xavier’s School Band, which continues to grow in both numbers and strength. Renowned for its outstanding performances, the Band is a source of pride within our school and the wider community. Whether performing at fortnightly school assemblies, special events or community functions, the Band consistently impresses audiences with its vibrant and polished sound.

We are incredibly proud of the musical opportunities available at St Francis Xavier’s and look forward to the continued success of our talented young musicians.
